Baseball Loses At San Diego State
The 21st-ranked Oregon State baseball team fell behind early to San Diego State and couldn't get out of that hole in an 18-2 loss to the Aztecs Friday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Last Game
Joey Matthews hit a one-out double to left in the bottom of the 11th Monday to send the sixth-ranked Beavers to a 5-4 win over UC Riverside in Palm Springs. Matthew's drive scored Zane Yanzick, who was pinch running for Kavin Keyes after the latter singled to open the inning. OSU held a 4-2 lead after seven innings but UC Riverside tied the game in the ninth by scoring two runs on a fielder's choice. Tyler Painton worked six innings in relief, holding the Highlanders to just a hit but he did not figure in the decision.

Big Bullpen Start
No one who appeared in relief for the Beavers in Palm Springs sports anything but an ERA of 0.00. Oregon State's pen worked a combined 17 2/3 innings in the four games and allowed just two unearned runs while walking six, allowing five hits and striking out 12. The `pen has a batting average against of .089.

Strive For Five
Oregon State is looking to go 5-0 to start a season for just the 19th time in program history and fourth time under head coach Pat Casey. The Beavers last did so in 2007 when the team started off the season 7-0.

Out-Scoring Opponents
Oregon State comes into the series with a plus-22 run differential, which, as of Monday, marked the third-best in the Pac-12 behind Arizona and UCLA. OSU has scored more runs in every inning aside from the second and the ninth.

Holding Down Their Spots
Oregon State has played a wide variety of players throughout the early part of the season and that is evidenced in the team's lineup. Tyler Smith (second) and Michael Conforto (third) are the only two players who have hit in the same spot of the lineup in every game.

Can This Keep Up?
OSU's opponents have scored first in three of the Beavers' four games this season, but that has mattered little as Oregon State is 3-0 in those instances. Can that keep up? The Beavers were 10-10 when opponents scored first last season and 30-10 when OSU scored first.

Singles
• Sunday's game is now slated for a 12 p.m. start.
• Oregon State's relievers have retired the first batter they've faced in seven of eight instances.
Max Engelbrekt has begun his OSU career with one win, a save and just one hit allowed in 5 1/3 innings.
