Last Season
Jake Rodriguez, Kavin Keyes and Michael Conforto all had two hits to pace the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 5-2 win over Utah Valley in the club's 2013 season opener Friday. Rodriguez drove in two runs on a two-out single to left in the third inning that served as the game-winner. Conforto had driven in the Beavers' first run of the game earlier in the inning, and he and Danny Hayes scored when Rodriguez lined the first pitch he saw into left. The win marked the Beavers' fourth consecutive season-opening win.
USA Connections
Three 2012 USA Baseball players will be in the stadium Saturday when OSU and Gonzaga meet. OSU's Dan Child and Michael Conforto played for club as did Gonzaga starting pitcher Marco Gonzales.
Boyd And Starting
Matt Boyd carries his 11-1 career record into Saturday's game and the lefty will be making his third career start against 82 appearances. His last start came as a freshman in the 2010.
What Returns - Offense
Oregon State returns eight starters from 2012; by virtue of that fact, OSU returns 27 of its 34 home runs (79.4 percent) and 268 of its 336 runs driven in (79.7 percent) from a year ago. Only three players who played significantly are not on the 2013 roster: Ryan Dunn, Ryan Gorton and John Tommasini.
What Returns - Pitching
Oregon State also returns much of its pitching, with the team returning 10 players who saw action on the hill in 2012 compared to just two losses. Thirty-eight of 40 wins (95 percent) return while returners accounted for 500 of 533 1/3 innings (93.7 percent).
Familiar
Oregon State is familiar with all three teams in Palm Springs. Pat Casey is 9-2 lifetime against Utah Valley, 18-11 against Gonzaga and 7-4 against UC Riverside.
Singles
Oregon State improved to 1-0 when an opponent scores first. The Beavers were 10-10 when that happened last season.
Max Engelbrekt made his first career appearance Friday and got the save after going 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Beavers have outscored Gonzaga, 16-6, during their three-game win streak in the series.
OSU sent more than four batters to plate in all but one inning Friday.
