Baseball Practices For First Time In 2010
Feb. 1, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team practiced for the first time as a full squad Monday in preparation for the 2010 season, which opens in 19 days in Hawaii.
The Beavers worked out as a full squad for approximately three hours Monday, although it was hardly the first time members of the team have worked out since returning from the holiday break. The Beavers have worked out individually since early January.
"It was good to get back on the field," head coach Pat Casey said. "We have a limited amount of time to get ready for the start of the season, so we will maximize every minute we have. It was a good practice Monday and we look forward to the rest of the week."
The Beavers are scheduled to work out the rest of the week, and may scrimmage, with official plans still to be decided.
Oregon State welcomed back six starters from last season, including 2009 All-Pac-10 honorable mention selections Adalberto Santos and Jared Norris as well as Stefen Romero, who hit a team-leading five home runs last season. OSU also returns the services of weekend starters Sam Gaviglio, a 2009 Freshman All-American, and Tyler Waldron, as well as closer Kevin Rhoderick and middle reliever Kraig Sitton, who was selected in the 17th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June but did not sign.
On Monday, two major collegiate baseball polls were released and the Beavers are ranked 17th in the Rivals.com top 25 and 18th in the NCBWA preseason poll. Last week, it was announced that the Beavers are 14th in the USA Today/ESPN College Coaches Preseason Top 25 poll. OSU is also ranked 10th by Collegiate Baseball and 25th by Baseball America entering the season.
OSU's average ranking through the five polls is No. 17.
Also on Monday, single-game tickets went on sale. Single-game tickets for the 2010 season are $20 for reserved and $10 for outfield seats located beyond the right-field fence.
