Beavers Fall In Game One Of Nashville Super Regional

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jake Rodriguez went 3-for-3 Friday to highlight Oregon State's night but the Beavers dropped an 11-1 decision to Vanderbilt in front of 3,349 at Hawkins Field in the opening game of the Nashville Super Regional.
The clubs will meet again Saturday night at 6 p.m. PT (8 p.m. in Nashville) in game two of the best-of-three series.
Sam Gaviglio started for the Beavers and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and 10 runs while walking six and striking out three. The right-hander dropped to 12-3 on the season after taking the loss.
His counterpart, Sonny Gray, improved to 12-3 this season after going 6 2/3 innings. He allowed four hits and a run while striking out four and walking two.
Rodriguez singled in the third, fifth and seventh innings for his sixth multiple-hit effort and second in as many games. Rodriguez, starting at second base, drove in the Beavers' (41-18 overall) lone run of the game with a single to right center in the seventh that scored Danny Hayes from second.
Vanderbilt (51-10) picked up four runs in the first, all of which came with two outs. Mike Yastrzemski singled home the first run, while Connor Harrell had two RBI and Jason Esposito one during the inning.
Esposito later homered off reliever Cam Booser in the sixth and Yastrzemski had a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Yastrzemski's home run was just the fourth this season off Gaviglio in more than 120 innings of work.
Yastrzemski, Esposito and Tony Kemp all had two hits to pace the Commodores, who tallied 11 as a team off Gaviglio, Booser and reliever James Nygren. Yastrzemski had a team-leading four RBI while Esposito posted three.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. PT (8 p.m. in Nashville). The game can be seen live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com. Mike Parker will call the game live on radio on the Beaver Sports Radio Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com).
