Gaviglio Dominates Arizona In Win Saturday
May 29, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - There was a pitcher's duel for most of Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Sam Gaviglio won it.
Gaviglio struck out 13 and scattered five hits over 7 2/3 innings as the Oregon State baseball team defeated Arizona, 5-0, in front of 2,846 fans at Goss Stadium. The win gave Oregon State a series victory over the Wildcats and the Beavers will go for the sweep Sunday at 12 p.m. in the regular season finale.
The game only got out of hand in the eighth after the Beavers scored three unearned runs. For most of the game, Gaviglio and Arizona starter Kyle Simon kept hitters off balance.
Through the first seven innings, OSU managed only a 2-0 lead; Dylan Jones drove in Carter Bell after OSU's third baseman reached on an error in the third and Andrew Susac hit his second home run of the season in the fourth.
Gaviglio took it from there.
The right-hander struck out the side in the first inning and concluded the fourth with three straight strikeouts after allowing runners to reach first and third on consecutive singles. He induced Arizona into only one flyball out.
Of the 23 outs recorded by Gaviglio, nine came on groundouts. He issued just two walks, and forced Arizona to go 1-for-14 with runners on base and 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Gaviglio got to a 3-2 count four times; he recorded three strikeouts and a walk when doing so.
In doing all of the above, Gaviglio led the Beavers to their fourth consecutive win and 10th in their last 14 games. He improved to 3-3 this season and 13-4 lifetime at Oregon State.
Simon, meanwhile, held the Beavers in check for 6 1/3 innings, limiting OSU to five hits and two runs while striking out four. But he issued five walks and was replaced by Bryce Bandilla in the seventh.
Bandilla went 1 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three runs - all unearned. He walked two and struck out one.
Simon dropped to 8-5 this season.
Offensively, the Beavers (31-21 overall, 12-14 Pacific-10 Conference) totaled eight hits on the afternoon and were led by Bell, who went 2-for-4 and drove home two runs in the eighth on a single.
Jones gave the Beavers the game-winning hit in the third and finished 1-for-4. He singled to right in front of Arizona (32-22, 11-15) outfielder Steve Selsky, scoring Bell from third in the bottom half of the third.
Rafael Valenzuela led Arizona with two hits.
The Beavers and Wildcats conclude the regular season Sunday at Goss Stadium. The game is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased by visiting the ticket office at Goss Stadium, which opens 2 ½ hours before first pitch, on gameday.
