May 15, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Kavin Keyes hit a bases-clearing triple in the second and Scott Schultz held Portland scoreless in 4 2/3 innings of relief to send the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 12-4 win over the Pilots Tuesday night at Goss Stadium. Keyes took a 1-2 pitch from Portland reliever J.R. Bunda and hit it to the base of the right-field fence for the three-run triple, which snapped a 4-4 tie. It was Keyes' second triple of the season and paced him to two hits and four RBI in extending his hit streak to seven games. The Beavers trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the second. Danny Hayes walked with the bases loaded to pull OSU to within one. Ryan Dunn then walked on four pitches to tie the game and prompt Portland to bring Bunda into the game. Schultz' outing was a season-long effort for the sophomore, who struck out two and allowed just one hit. He picked up the win and improved to 3-0 this season. OSU (33-17 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the first but watched as the Pilots scored four in their half of the second. Bo Cornish doubled home two runs to highlight Portland's inning. Schultz came on in relief of OSU starter Taylor Starr with one out and runners on first and second in the fourth. Schultz was able to induce Sam Westendorf into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Starr made his fifth start of the season and worked 3 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits and four runs and did not figure in the decision. The Beavers chased Portland (25-19) starter Kody Watts after just 1 2/3 innings. He allowed four hits and seven runs to drop to 2-3 this season. OSU tallied 12 hits against four Portland pitchers. Keyes, Hayes, Dylan Davis, Ryan Gorton and Michael Conforto all had two hits apiece in the win. Hayes drove in two and extended his hit streak to five games. Ryan Dunn went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
