Baseball Falls In Series Opener To No. 12 Stanford
May 4, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Max Gordon collected three hits to lead Oregon State but the Beavers, who held a late lead, could not hold on in an 8-2 loss to No. 12 Stanford Friday night at Goss Stadium.
Gordon singled three times to set a season-high, and scored the Beavers' first run of the game on a Tyler Smith double in the seventh. OSU added to the lead with a Michael Conforto single, but the Cardinal scored three in the eighth to take the lead and eventually the game.
Ben Wetzler started for the Beavers and left after seven innings and 108 pitches. He did not figure the decision after allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five and walking three.
Stanford (29-12 overall, 11-8 Pac-12 Conference) tied the game when Austin Wilson tripled off the right center field fence, driving in Stephen Piscotty and Brian Ragira, who had each singled off Wetzler to start the eighth. Alex Blandino gave the Cardinal the 3-2 advantage when he then doubled to left.
The Cardinal tacked on five runs in the ninth for the six-run lead.
Ryan Gorton ended the game was the pitcher of record for the Beavers (28-15, 9-10) and dropped to 1-1 this season.
Stanford's Mark Appel allowed the Beavers' two runs in the seventh but otherwise suffered no damage and improved to 7-1 this season. He worked seven innings and allowed nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Conforto had two hits in the loss for the Beavers and his RBI in the seventh was his 55th of the season; he needs one to break into a tie for 10th for most in a single-season at Oregon State.
Piscotty, Ragira and Blandino each had three hits to pace Stanford, which finished with 13 as a club.
