Baseball Drops 3-2 Decision Saturday At USC
April 28, 2012
LOS ANGELES - Jace Fry allowed six hits and three runs over 7 2/3 innings, but the Oregon State baseball team could not overcome a two-run fifth inning by USC in a 3-2 loss to the Trojans Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
Fry struck out six and threw 114 pitches in his eighth start of the season but was saddled with the loss in the one-run decision. He dropped to 4-3 this season.
The Trojans took the lead for good in the fifth inning. James Roberts, with USC down 2-1, singled to left center to tie the game, then watched as the next batter, Kevin Roundtree, drove in the game-winning run with a single chopped over Ryan Dunn's head at third.
Andrew Triggs started for USC (21-17 overall, 6-10 Pac-12 Conference) and worked seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs with five strikeouts. Triggs picked up the win to improve to 4-4 this season.
USC tied the game in the fourth on a squeeze by Dante Flores but the Beavers retook the lead on a sacrifice fly by Max Gordon in the fifth.
Martin Viramontes came on and got the final five outs for his fifth save of the season.
Rodriguez led the Beavers with two hits while Michael Conforto went 1-for-3, singling in the sixth, to extend his hit streak to 12 games.
Oregon State and USC play the final game of their series Sunday in an 11 a.m. PT start. Please note this is a change from the original 1 p.m. start.
