Baseball Drops Series Opener At Washington State
April 23, 2010
PULLMAN, Wash. - Adalberto Santos doubled twice but the Oregon State baseball team lost the series opener to Washington State, 5-1, Friday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Santos doubled to right center to start the game, then doubled home a run in the fifth to earn his eighth multiple-hit effort of the season. But his doubles were not enough to get the Beavers the victory in front of 1,012 fans on a sunny and later clear night in Pullman.
Washington State got on the board in the third, pushing ahead for a 3-0 lead. The Cougars scored first when Cody Bartlett came in from second on a throwing error. Kyle Johnson, who reached on the throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt, scored two batters later when Shea Vucinich grounded out to short.
Derek Jones made it 3-0 when he homered over the left center fence.
OSU scored a solo run in the fifth to get on the board. Michael Miller reached on an infield single, moved to second on a bunt by Keith Jennette bunt and found himself at third after a wild pitch. Santos drove in Miller with a chopper over the third-base bag that went for two bases.
The Cougars, however, scored two more in the seventh to give themselves a four-run lead, one that never evaporated.
Greg Peavey went seven full innings in his ninth start of the season but was saddled with his first loss of the year to drop to 3-1. He allowed nine hits and five runs - three earned - while striking out three.
Peavey threw 92 pitches in what amounted to his fifth quality start of the season.
Chad Arnold threw a complete game effort, allowing OSU's only run, five hits and three walks and improved to 4-2 this season.
Bartlett led Washington State with two hits. All told, the Cougars posted nine hits on the night.
The loss dropped the Beavers to 20-12 overall and 3-7 in Pacific-10 Conference play. Washington State improved to 20-14 overall and 4-6 in league play.
Oregon State and Washington State continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m. PT from Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. Tanner Robles (4-3, 2.44) is slated to go for the Beavers against Washington State left-hander David Stilley (1-1, 6.59).
