Beavers Downed By Stanford In Series Opener
April 16, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State scored six two-out runs in the fifth, but allowed 10 runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to fall to Stanford, 14-6, in the opener of a three-game series Friday night at Goss Stadium.
The Beavers fell behind early, 4-0, after a four-run first by the Cardinal. But OSU exploded for six runs in the fifth, all with two outs, off Stanford starter Brett Mooneyham. The six-run inning was punctuated by a two-out double by Stefen Romero, clearing the bases.
Two innings later, however, Stanford scored five runs off three Oregon State pitchers, including Greg Peavey, who started and left the game after allowing 10 hits and five runs - four earned - over 6 1/3 innings. The righty, the reigning Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week, did not get the decision.
That went to reliever Kraig Sitton, who dropped to 1-1 this season after three hits and three runs and was not able to record an out.
Stanford scored five more runs in the eighth, effectively ending the game after coming out of the inning with an eight-run lead.
Chris Reed threw one inning of relief for Stanford and improved to 1-0 on the year.
Mooneyham was forced out of the game during OSU's five-run fifth. He allowed six runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings.
The Beavers dropped to 20-9 overall on the year and 3-4 in Pac-10 games. Stanford, meanwhile, improved to 16-13 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Oregon State and Stanford continue their three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. PT. Left-hander Tanner Robles (4-3, 2.25) is slated to go for the Beavers against Stanford right-hander Jordan Pries (3-1, 3.06).
