Conforto, Matthews Lead Beavers To Sweep Of Arkansas-Pine Bluff
April 15, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Michael Conforto went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and Joey Matthews drove in two for the second consecutive game as the Oregon State baseball team swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a 16-1 win Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Conforto drove in two runs in both the second and fourth innings and finished with four singles on the day. He now has 50 RBI on the season after finishing with 14 over the last five games.
Matthews tripled home two in the Beavers' four-run fourth to highlight the inning as OSU took a 10-0 lead. He finished the series with consecutive multiple-hit and mult-RBI games after he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run Saturday. He was 3-for-3 on Sunday.
Dylan Davis also had three hits for the Beavers, capping off his day with a run-scoring double in the eighth that sent OSU to a 15-1 lead. He also hit a solo home run in the seventh, his third of the year.
All told, the Beavers (23-11 overall) finished with a season-high 18 hits on Sunday, surpassing the previous mark of 17 against California. Ryan Barnes, Ryan Gorton and Tyler Smith all had two hits apiece, giving the Beavers six players in double figures.
The 16 runs scored by the Beavers also set a season-high, besting the 13 tallied by the Beavers March 18 against California and Feb. 26 against Kansas State.
The loss went to Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-28-1) starter Michael Newby, who allowed nine hits and eight runs in three innings. He fell to 1-6 this season.
Taylor Starr made his second start of the year and went five innings, allowing two hits and a run while striking out three. He got the win and improved to 3-1 this season.
Both hits allowed by Starr were infield singles to third - one each by Eddie Williams and James Boulware.
Oregon State's bullpen, consisting of Scott Schultz, Cole Baylis, Carlos Rodriguez, and in the ninth, Davis, combined to finish out the game with four scoreless innings, holding the Lions to one walk with four strikeouts.
Gorton put the Beavers up, 1-0, with a single in the first, then watched as a single by Barnes and wild pitch by Newby made it 3-0 in the second. Conforto then singled home two to give the Beavers the 5-0 advantage.
The Beavers continue non-conference action Monday when visiting Portland at Joe Etzel Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. PT.
