Beavers Drop Marathon Contest To No. 3 UCLA
April 10, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 17th-ranked Oregon State baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 3 UCLA in a marathon 16-inning game Saturday night at Goss Stadium.
UCLA's Steve Rodriguez singled to right in the top of the 16th off Oregon State reliever Ryan Gorton, ending the game.
The 16 innings was four shy of Oregon State's longest game, which was 20 innings in 1972 against Washington. Saturday's game last six hours, 23 minutes. There are no official NCAA records on lengths of games, but for comparison, the 25-inning game between Texas and Boston College last season lasted seven hours, three minutes.
The game featured just four runs and 25 hits. The teams left a combined 39 runners on base, with UCLA posting 22, one off tying the Pacific-10 Conference record and two behind the NCAA single-game mark.
Oregon State used a total of eight pitchers, with Gorton going five full innings. He allowed six hits and two runs to drop to 3-1 on the year.
UCLA's Garrett Claypool picked up the win after allowing one hit over 4 2/3 innings. He improved to 4-1 on the year.
Tanner Robles started for the Beavers, scattering five hits and a run over 6 1/3 innings. He threw 106 pitches and struck out eight.
Robles' counterpart, Trevor Bauer, lasted 7 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out eight.
UCLA scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a groundout by Tyler Rahmatulla.
The loss dropped Oregon State to 20-7 on the year and 3-2 in league play. The Bruins, meanwhile, improved to 24-3 overall and 3-2 in Pac-10 play.
Oregon State and UCLA conclude the three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. at Goss Stadium. Sam Gaviglio goes for Oregon State against UCLA's Rob Rasmussen.
Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased by visiting the ticket office at Goss Stadium, which opens 2 ½ hours before first pitch.
