Baseball Drops Second Game Of Series To USC
April 2, 2010
LOS ANGELES - The 21st-ranked Oregon State baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision to USC Friday night at Dedeaux Field in a game featuring an uncharacteristic six errors from the Beavers.
All told, the teams combined for nine miscues, easily the most in a game featuring the Beavers this season. However, the game was not out of reach, despite the defensive miscues, until the seventh when Ricky Oropesa hit a three-run home run for USC.
Of the 10 runs scored in the game, only five were earned.
Tanner Robles made his seventh start of the season for the Beavers, and went 4 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and three runs - only one earned - with six strikeouts. He threw 89 pitches before being replaced by Tyler Waldron with one out in the fifth.
Robles dropped to 4-3 on the year.
Robles was victimized with two unearned runs in the fourth as the Beavers committed three errors in the inning. The Trojans did manage a double in the inning, and scored one of their runs on a sacrifice fly, which put the game at 3-0 in their favor.
USC (14-13 overall, 2-3 Pacific-10 Conference) opened the game with a 1-0 lead, scoring when Oropesa singled home Joe De Pinto. He had led off the inning with a bloop single to center, then moved to second on a wild pitch.
Down 4-0 entering the seventh, OSU (17-6, 1-1) utilized two USC errors to score two runs of its own, pulling to within two, 4-2. Adalberto Santos drove in Jared Norris with a double to right center, then watched as Carter Bell scored when USC's catcher, Kevin Roundtree, could not hold on to the ball in a throw home from the first baseman, Oropesa.
Ben Mount started for USC and went six full innings to improve to 3-1 on the year. He allowed four hits and two runs while striking out seven.
Santos and Parker Berberet led the Beavers with two hits apiece.
Oropesa and Matt Foat each had two hits to pace USC.
Oregon State and USC conclude their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. PT. The Beavers have not announced a starter while the Trojans will throw right-hander Andrew Triggs (1-3, 4.15).
