Baseball Downs Washington To Take Series
April 1, 2012
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jace Fry held Washington to two hits over seven innings and Tyler Smith drove in the game-winning runs in the fifth as the 22nd-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated Washington, 5-3, Sunday at Goss Stadium.
The win gave the Beavers the series victory - their second in three over a Pac-12 Conference opponent this season.
Fry went a season-long seven innings and threw a season-high 110 pitches to improve to 2-1 this season. He allowed two hits and three runs - all of which were unearned as the Beavers committed three errors in the first two innings.
Ryan Barnes gave the Beavers (17-8 overall, 6-3 Pac-12) a two-run cushion in the seventh when he hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Gorton.
Tony Bryant came on for the save in the ninth and picked up his fifth of the year. The Huskies (16-9, 3-3) loaded the bases with one out but Bryant struck out Caleb Brown and forced Robert Pehl to ground out to Barnes at first to end the game.
Smith led the Beavers with two hits while he and Michael Conforto finished with two RBI apiece. Conforto homered in the first, a two-run shot, that was his sixth of the season and extended his hit streak to seven games, tying a season-long.
Smith also extended his hit streak to a season-long seven games where he is 15-for-26 (.577) with eight RBI.
Washington starter Austin Voth took the loss to drop to 4-1 this season. He allowed three hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Brown and Joe Meggs led Washington with two hits apiece.
The Beavers stay at home Tuesday when hosting Portland at Goss Stadium in a non-conference game. First pitch is slated for 5:35 p.m. PT.
