Beavers Score Early, Down Southern Utah In Midweek Affair
March 24, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Adalberto Santos hit his third home run of the season and Ryan Gorton threw five scoreless innings as the 17th-ranked Oregon State baseball team defeated Southern Utah, 11-1, Wednesday night at Goss Stadium.
"This was a good midweek victory," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "Ryan threw well and we got guys in to get some experience. That's key at this point of the season."
With the win, Oregon State improved to 15-3 on the year and the Beavers have won nine straight dating back to March 6. The Beavers will be going for their 10th consecutive win Friday when taking on Long Beach State in OSU's final non-conference series before starting Pacific-10 Conference play April 1 at USC.
Gorton made his first start of the season and improved to 2-0 - and 4-0 in his career - after going five full innings. He scattered six hits over that stretch and did not walk a batter while striking out four.
Santos opened the game with a one-out solo shot in the first, his third round tripper of the season. It was followed by a Parker Berberet double that scored Matt Boyd and gave OSU a 2-0 lead after one inning.
That lead ballooned to 5-0 after four. Berberet drove in his second run of the game with a bases-loaded walk in the second, and Michael Miller and Santos both drove in runs in the fourth for the five-run lead.
Rob Folsom, who came on in the prior half inning, doubled home two in the sixth to highlight a five-run inning for OSU. During the sixth, the Beavers walked four times, and also saw Carter Bell drive in a run on an infield single.
The Beavers added a solo run on a Brent Warren fielder's choice in the seventh to cap off the victory.
Berberet paced the Beavers with two hits, while he, Santos and Folsom all tied for the team lead with two RBI. Berberet, Boyd, Michael Miller and Keith Jennette each finished with two walks as OSU totaled 11 as a team. That tied the Beavers' previous high set during the Tennessee series.
The Beavers, as a team, lowered their team earned run average to 2.63 after giving up just the run to Southern Utah.
Chase Rezac started and took the loss for Southern Utah (4-14 overall). He went two innings, allowing three runs and two hits while walking four.
The Thunderbirds managed their only run of the game in the sixth when Bucky Aona doubled to right center, scoring Marcus Romero.
Oregon State welcomes Long Beach State to Corvallis for a three-game series starting Friday. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT. Right-hander Greg Peavey (2-0, 2.39 ERA) is slated to go for the Beavers against Long Beach State righty Andrew Gagnon (3-2, 3.00).
