Boyd, Beavers Down UC Riverside To Open Trip To Surprise

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Left-handed freshman Matt Boyd recorded his second win of the season in a 10-3 win over UC Riverside in the first game of the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz.
The Beavers scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Boyd started for the first time this season for the Beavers and went a career long 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on only four hits while only throwing 78 pitches. He recorded a career-high seven strike outs.
Carter Bell got the scoring going in the bottom of the second when he alertly reached first after the Riverside catcher dropped a swinging third strike to keep himself alive. Jared Norris advanced Bell to second on a single to center field. Freshman catcher Parker Berberet singled to right field scoring Bell. Norris and Berberet were able to advance to third and second respectively on a throw to the plate.
Tyler Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Norris scored on a wild pitch which also allowed Berberet to get to third and Smith advanced to second. Keith Jennette dropped down a sacrifice bunt with the runners in motion that was fielded by the catcher who through in time to get Jennette at first. Bereberet scored from third on the play and Smith scored all the way from second base after being waved home by third base coach Marty Lees.
The Beavers (6-2 overall) added two more runs in the third when starting pitcher Boyd hit a two run shot over the right center wall, scoring Stefen Romero who reached by a hit by pitch. It was Boyd's first career home run.
He finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in at the plate.
UC Riverside added one run in the fourth inning when Michael Hur homered off of Boyd. It was the first hit for the Highlanders. The Highlanders added two more runs in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 6-3 in favor of Oregon State.
Oregon State blew the game open in the seventh with a two-RBI triple off the bat of Rob Folsom who came on in the inning before as a defensive replacement in sixth. Berberet came to the plate next and blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall - the first of his career - giving the beavers a 10-3 lead.
Along with Boyd, Bell and Berberet went 2-for-4 in the game with the latter driving in three runs.
Kevin Rhoderick came in relief in the seventh inning and pitched 1.2 innings allowing no hits and striking out two. Dylan Jones and Ryan Gorton both came in the game to get one out a piece in the ninth. The relievers pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing only one hit.
UC Riverside starter Matt Andriese gave up five earned runs in six innings, allowing seven hits while striking out seven in a losing effort. He fell to 0-1 on the season.
UC Riverside dropped to 6-3 on the season.
