Smith, Starr Lead Baseball Past Saint Louis
March 3, 2012
SURPRISE, Ariz. - Tyler Smith tripled home the go-ahead runs in the Beavers' three-run sixth inning and Taylor Starr picked up his first win since 2008 as the Oregon State baseball team defeated Saint Louis, 6-5, Saturday at Surprise Stadium. Dylan Davis added three hits - including two doubles - for the Beavers, who finished with 12 as a team and improved to 7-4 this season. The Billikens, meanwhile, dropped to 6-5 on the year. OSU took advantage of a pair of Saint Louis miscues in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead after finding itself down 3-1 entering the inning. Ryan Dunn reached on a throwing error to make it 3-2 and Smith tripled to left on a ball that was lost in the sun by Billikens left fielder Alex Kelly. The triple scored two and capped off the three-run inning with every run unearned. Cole Baylis started for the Beavers and lasted just 15 pitches - including three walks - before being relieved by Starr in the first. Starr worked a career-long five innings and was replaced by Zack Reser in the sixth after giving up six hits and three runs. Starr improved to 1-1 on the year, picking up his first win since May 11, 2008 against UCLA. He is 4-2 in his career. Davis doubled in both the fourth and sixth innings and singled home a run in the seventh to finish with his fourth multiple-hit game of the season and second in as many days. Oregon State saw the Billikens touch Starr for three runs in the second before scoring its first run in the fourth when Jake Rodriguez singled home Davis. Clay Smith started for Saint Louis and worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs - one earned - while walking three and striking out six. He threw 113 pitches but did not get the decision as reliever Steve Jensen was touched for one run in the Beavers' three-run sixth. Jensen dropped to 0-2 this season after allowing one hit and one run in 1/3 of an inning. Cole Brocker worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in the win in his sixth appearance of the season. Tony Bryant, meanwhile, allowed two runs in the ninth but was able to strand the game-tying run on base to record his second save of the season. Oregon State plays its final game of the weekend Sunday when it takes on Northern Illinois at 10 a.m. PT (11 a.m. in Arizona). The game will be played on the Texas Rangers' complex field 3.
