Feb. 24, 2012
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 21st-ranked Oregon State baseball team fell behind early to San Diego State and couldn't get out of that hole in an 18-2 loss to the Aztecs Friday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
San Diego State put its first four runners on base in the first, and each scored to take a 4-0 lead after one inning.
The Beavers were able to score one in the third when Michael Conforto blooped a single to right, but the Aztecs stretched their lead to 5-1 in the fourth and 8-1 in the fifth when Jomel Torres hit a pinch-hit, three-run double.
San Diego scored in six of its eight innings at bat, including a seven-run seventh to stretch the lead to 14.
The loss went to Oregon State Cole Baylis, who worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, eight runs and four walks while striking out four. He is now 0-1 on the year.
San Diego State (2-4 overall) starter Travis Pitcher walked six in four innings and did not get the decision. The win went to reliever Michael Cederoth after the right-hander threw three innings, allowing three hits and a run. He improved to 2-0 this season.
John Spirk led San Diego State with three hits while Jake Romanski drove in four runs.
