
Colussi-Pelaez, DeMatteo Named Student-Athletes of the Month

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State Athletics is proud to announce Mariana Colussi-Pelaez and Joseph DeMatteo have been named January Student-Athletes of the Month.
Colussi-Pelaez, a junior hailing from Oakville, Ontario, has been a regular in the Beavers' uneven bars lineup during her first two years in Corvallis. She has "hit" 27 out of 29 routines in her 19-meet career. As a freshman in 2016, she connected on all 22 of her routines performing on the bars in all 12 meets as well as making 10 appearances on the balance beam. She has career-highs of 9.850 on bars and 9.825 on the beam. Majoring in biology with a pre-med option, she is a 2017 Pac-12 All-Academic First Team selection and a two-time Scholastic All-American by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women.

DeMatteo, a senior studying digital communication arts, is 16-26 overall in open tournaments as a Beaver. The Issaquah, Wash. native has racked up four technical falls and four pins in his three seasons on the mat at Oregon State, including a second-place finish at the Boxer Open in 2015.

Student-athletes are selected each month and are coordinated by the Academics for Student-Athletes staff.
The Beavers' grapplers remain on their road trip that began at the Midlands Invitational in Evanston, Ill. Dec. 29-30. OSU is back in action Friday at South Dakota State and again at Iowa State on Sunday. Oregon State returns home to Gill Coliseum next Sunday, Jan. 14 to host Wyoming.

The No. 12 Oregon State gymnastics team opens the season next Saturday, Jan. 13 at Pittsburgh. The Beavers make their home debut Saturday, Jan. 27 when they host Stanford.
