Beavers Finish Fifth At Season-Opening Tourney
September 26, 2017 | Men's Golf
ERIE, Colo. – The Oregon State men's golf team notched a top-five finish in its first tournament of the 2017-18 season, placing fifth at the Mark Simpson Invitational on Tuesday.
Â
The Beavers concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 4-under 285-286-289--860 at the par-72, 7,676-yard Colorado National Golf Club to finish in fifth place in the 20-team field.
Â
Freshman Spencer Tibbits led the Beavers in his first collegiate tournament, finishing in a tie for ninth place with a 6-under 68-72-70--210. He had a team-high 12 birdies over three rounds with four bogeys and a double.
Â
Senior Jonas Liebich shot a 1-over 74-71-72--217 to finish in a tie for 34th place and junior Trevor Yu was a stroke back with a 2-over 72-72-74--218 to put him in a tie for 43rd.
Â
Freshman Keaton Gudz finished in a tie for 51st place in his first collegiate event with a 3-over 72-74-73--219 and sophomore Shawn Lu shot a 5-over 73-71-77--221 for a tie for 64th.
Â
"I think we can take a lot of positives away from this tournament," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "Overall, we did a lot of good things. We hit the ball real well and executed tough shots real well. In the end, we just made too many mistakes and had too many big numbers.
Â
"Spencer played great finishing in the top 10 in his first tournament. Jonas and Trevor played three solid rounds. We just need to get guys comfortable shooting low scores."
Â
Host Colorado and Utah both finished the 54-hole event with a 22-under 842, and the Utes won the title in a playoff. Wyoming finished in third with an 18-under 846 and UC Riverside was two strokes better than the Beavers for fourth place with a 6-under 858.
Â
The Beavers have a couple of weeks off before returning to action on Monday, Oct. 9 and Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.
