The Beavers went 99-34 over the two seasons
PORTLAND – A decade after the Oregon State baseball team pulled off the improbable, the 2006 and 2007 Beavers were enshrined in the state of Oregon lore. The teams were recognized via induction into the state of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame Tuesday night at the Multnomah Athletic Club.
More than a dozen members of the two teams, including head coach Pat Casey, attended the event. They were there to be honored for being just the fifth NCAA program to win back-to-back national titles. They won a Pac-10 title in 2006 and combined to go 99-34 (.744).
The program won its first of two titles in 2006, going 50-16 – at the time a school-record for victories. The Beavers were forced to play their way through elimination games after losing their first in Omaha to Miami. OSU won its next four games at Rosenblatt Stadium before taking the last two games of the Championship Series against North Carolina.
The 2007 was, to say the least, a year in reverse for the Beavers. OSU finished the regular season with 38 wins but only 10 in Pac-10 play, tying for sixth in the conference. But OSU, one of the last teams in the field of 64, went 11-1 in NCAA play, winning their last 10 straight. The Beavers trailed for just half an inning in Omaha, out-scoring opponents, 42-17, en route to their second consecutive title.
Six Beavers eventually went on to play at the Major League level after the titles: Pitchers Eddie Kunz, Joe Paterson and Mike Stutes, infielder Darwin Barney and outfielders Tyler Graham and Cole Gillespie. Mitch Canham, who was an Academic All-American in 2007, recently won his first professional title as he managed the Modesto Nuts to the California League crown.
All told, 24 players who won a national title with Oregon State were later drafted by MLB clubs.
