Beavers Notch Another Match Play Victory
September 19, 2017 | Women's Golf
MADISON, Wis. – The Oregon State women's golf team concluded the East West Match Play Challenge on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over UC Davis.
Junior Olivia Benzin defeated Christine Danielsson 4 and 3, freshman Ellie Slama took down Madison Wood 3 and 1, and sophomore Nicole Schroeder held on for a 1 up win over Rei Nakatani.
The Beavers knocked off Michigan 3-2 on Monday at the par-72, 6,219-yard University Ridge Golf Course to go unbeaten in the match play competition.
Benzin went 2-0 in the tournament, while senior Susie Cavanagh, junior Haley Nist, Schroeder and Slama all went 1-1.
Sophomore Mari Nishiura was one of eight golfers competing as an individual, and she claimed that title with 1 up wins over Tzu Yu Chou of Iowa State on Monday and Kathy Lim of Michigan on Tuesday.
"It's great to walk away from this event with two match play wins," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "Oliva is starting off her junior year right where she left off after NCAA Regionals. We're excited to see how her year progresses.
"We're also happy with the play from Mari who was the individual match play champion. It's good to see them come back from the summer fired up and ready to compete."
There were eight teams in the field that began with 36 holes of stroke play competition on Sunday. The teams were then seeded and competed in match play on Monday and Tuesday.
The match play format was five golfers competing head-to-head in individual play with one point given to the winning player. The first team to three points won the match. Extra holes were played as necessary.
The Beavers return to action in one week when they compete at the Coeur d'Alene Invitational in Idaho on Tuesday, Sept. 26 and Wednesday, Sept. 27.
