Volleyball Moves to 10-2 with Sweep of Broncos
September 16, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
BOISE, Idaho – The Oregon State volleyball squad was impressive Saturday with a three-set sweep of Boise State to complete the Beavers' non-conference season and to cap off the Boise State Classic with a 2-1 record.
Â
With the Beavers' second win of the weekend, they advance their record to 10-2 heading into conference play next week. OSU defeated the Broncos by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20.
Â
The Beavers fell behind early in the first set needing a timeout trailing 8-2 before settling in. OSU's defense picked up its play and the Beavers' play at the net picked up as they rejected three BSU attacks to tie the game for the first time at 16-16. From there it was all Beavers carrying their momentum forward to take a 23-17 lead and eventually finished off the set 25-21.
Â
Following a convincing second set win (25-16), OSU fell into a lull in the third set trailing 7-3 before taking a timeout to regroup. This time the Beavers came out of the timeout to score four in a row to get back in the game, but didn't catch the Broncos until it was 13-13. The teams went back and forth until OSU took the lead for the final time at 18-17.
Â
"We got down early in the first and third sets and worked our way back in," head coach Mark Barnard said. "That was the most impressive thing I saw today. We showed calm and compure and didn't let the beginning dictate how those sets would go."
Â
OSU's middle blockers Kory Cheshire and Maddy Gravley had a strong outing with Cheshire tallying a career-high 12 kills and Gravley terminating four times and turned away the Broncos with six blocks.
Â
"We did a much better job of working our middles, which we lacked the last couple matches," Barnard said. "Kory (Cheshire) was really good today too. It's a big plus for us to be effective in the middle. The other area we showed improvement today was in our serving game. We were a lot more tactical in the placement of our serves and were very effective."
Â
Offensively, Mary-Kate Marshall led the way with a match-high 16 kills and Maddie Goings added 11 kills as well.
Â
Game Notes: OSU is now 10-0 all-time against Boise State … junior middle blocker Kory Cheshire recorded a career-high 12 kills against the Broncos … Cheshire was among three Beavers to register double-digits in kills Saturday along with Mary-Kate Marshall (16) and Maddie Goings (11) … In addition, three Beavers tallied double-digits in digs for the second time this weekend – Kayla Ellis (14), Grace Massey (14) and Marshall (12) … Maddy Gravley was active at the net registering a team-high six blocks.
