Beavers Bounce Back with Sweep of Bengals
September 15, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
BOISE, Idaho – Oregon State coming off a four-set loss to No. 1 Minnesota earlier in the day, rebounded Friday night to sweep past Idaho State at the Boise State Classic. The match, which was delayed more than an hour by the tourney's preceding match between Minnesota and Boise State, was littered with challenge reviews throughout the contest.
Â
"We won and that's about all that was positive," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We simply were not good tonight. We had a few good moments but really need to be better."
Â
Despite Barnard's overall assessment, the Beavers improved their record to 9-2 with the victory over the Bengals (3-8) by scores of 25-11, 25-23 and 25-19.
Â
Freshman outside hitter Maddie Goings had a career outing recording 13 kills and five blocks, both career-marks while redshirt freshman hitter Haylie Bennett added 11 kills and a career-best seven blocks. Mary-Kate Marshall poured in 13 kills as well to tie for match-high.
Â
The Beavers best stretch of the match came late in the second set. Trailing 23-21, OSU came out of a timeout to steal the set 25-23. It was a Goings kill followed by a strong block from Bennett and Serena Bruin that swung the momentum to the Beavers'. An attack error by ISU's Abby Garrity gave OSU a 24-23 lead and forced a timeout by the Bengals. Coming out of the timeout, Bennett and Bruin once again set the block rejecting Garrity to take the second set 25-23.
Â
"It was a great come-from-behind moment in Set 2," Barnard said. "There was good execution there and was a very important point in the match for us."
Â
Game Notes: OSU is now 9-0 all-time against Idaho State … three Beavers registered double-digits in kills Friday night with Maddie Goings and Mary-Kate Marshall each tallying 13 kills and Haylie Bennett adding 11 … Goings' 13 kills and five blocks were both career-highs … Bennett also registered a career-best seven blocks … Friday night's match is the first of the season when the Beavers failed to record an ace.
Â
Next Up: The Beavers return to Bronco Gym tomorrow to take on Boise State, at 11 a.m. PT to complete play at the Boise State Classic.
