Beavers Drop Match at Portland

Oregon State hit post twice in contest
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team hit the woodwork twice, but a 90th minute penalty kick gave the University of Portland a 1-0 win over the Beavers Friday evening at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore.
"At the end of the day, it was hard to end the game in that manner," said Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode. "First half we executed very well. In the second half, we could have executed our game plan better. Now we need to regroup and move forward."
Â
Paula Leblic and Kayla Latham both hit the goal frame in the first half, as the Beavers were unfortunate not to find a breakthrough. Oregon State held an 11-8 advantage in shots in the match.
The defeat snapped Oregon State's five-match unbeaten streak against the Pilots, which dated back to 2011.
Leblic came close to putting the Beavers in front less than 12 minutes in, when her curling effort from the left side hit the outside of the post. Oregon State created another chance less than five minutes later, when a cross from Nikki Faris narrowly missed the head of Emma Jones at the far post.
Taylor Lemmond got onto the end of a Jones set piece in the 30th minute, but her shot was blocked by a Portland defender. Latham very nearly put the Beavers ahead in the 32nd, heading the ball off the crossbar from close range.
The Beavers continued to control the match for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes, but neither side found a breakthrough as the teams went to the break scoreless.
Oregon State earned a free kick from 25 yards our early in the second half, but Leblic's shot sailed high.
Bella Geist came up with a big save in the 62nd minute, denying the Pilots on a scramble in the box to keep things level. Nicole Nickerson redirected a cross goalward in the 74th minute, but the attempt spun just over the bar. Latham attempted a shot with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but the effort rolled wide.
Portland broke through with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to take the win.
Oregon State will open Pac-12 play next Friday, when it takes on Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
