Redshirt-Senior leads the Beavers on and off the field
One word describes Kathryn Baker: Competitor
Â
On the field, Baker is the heart of the Beaver defense and a fierce competitor, never wanting to leave the pitch. All but one game she has played in at Oregon State she has been a starter in and twice in her career she has tallied the second most minutes on the team for a season, both times only trailing the goalkeeper in the category. On the pitch, she is not only a key defender for the Beaver squad, but also an important leader for the team as someone that has been through some of the most field time on the club
Â
"Having her as a leader is very important for our team," said Beaver head coach Linus Rhode. "She has a lot of experience, but also this great energy as a leader
Â
But off the field Baker is more relaxed, and a great friend to her teammates as well as pretty much anyone she meets. The Vancouver B.C. native tries to put out positivity anywhere she goes.
Â
"When she steps on the field she is an extremely fierce competitor," said Rhode. "But off the field she is very different. She is very friendly and extremely easy to talk to."
Â
Starting off her final season with the Beavers Baker is very excited about the possibilities of this year's squad who are off to a solid start to the season with a 1-1-2 record with a win over Seattle University.
Â
"I am so excited, we are all super focused and I think this one will be the best season yet if we keep playing like we know we can."
Â
But Baker is also considering her future after soccer, and trying to think of ways she will be able to get her dose of competition off the pitch.
Â
"I've been prepping for (the future) a lot, I actually had an internship this summer that I think set me up pretty well moving forward," Baker said. "I've been searching for post soccer activities as well."
Â
Then followed that up after some laughs with "I need something to do I'm too competitive to not do anything."
