The Game —
- Oregon State opens its 2017 home slate when taking on Portland State Saturday morning at Reser Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:01 a.m. PT.
- The game is slated to air on the Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Oregon. The Pac-12 Network can be found on Dish Network (406), Xfinity/Comcast (Network: 421 and 720 HD, Oregon: 420) and Charter Spectrum (332/452). Consult your provider for other listings.
- Every game this season can be heard live via the TuneIn application, which is available online and on smartphones and tablets. To find the game, once the app has been downloaded, search "Beaver Sports Network."
- The 11:01 a.m. start marks the earliest in Oregon State history.
- Oregon State is 2-0 in home openers under head coach Gary Andersen. Oregon State opened the Andersen era in 2015 with a 26-7 victory over Weber State. The Beavers then defeated Idaho State by a 37-7 score in the second game of the '16 season.
- Oregon State and Portland State are meeting for the fifth time since 1983, and the first since a 29-14 win by the Beavers in 2014. Saturday's matchup is the fourth all-time in Corvallis.
- The Beavers have scored 155 points in the four previous meetings with the Vikings. Portland State, meanwhile, has scored 49. That's an average win of 39-12.
- Current Oregon State offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Weber State in 2007 when the Wildcats defeated Portland State, 73-68, setting an NCAA FBS and FCS record for most combined points scored in a single game. Weber State finished with 687 yards of total offense.
Wear Orange —
- Fans are encouraged to wear orange at Saturday's game.
OSU-PSU Connections —
- Portland State defensive line coach David Lose was a three-year letterwinner at Oregon State, playing in 2000, 2002 and 2003. He played in 22 games and made 18 starts on the offensive line.
- Oregon State coaches Kevin McGiven (2006-08), Kevin Clune (2005-08), Chad Kauha'aha'a (2005-08) and quality control analyst Jake Cookus (2005-11) served on the Weber State staff, playing Portland State each season. The Wildcats lost in both 2005 (39-14) and 2006 (20-10), and won in 2007 (73-68), 2008 (31-21), 2009 (36-29), 2010 (44-41) and 2011 (48-33).
Familiar Faces —
- Naturally, with two state of Oregon programs, Saturday's game will feature a number of players who competed at the same high school.
- Portland's Central Catholic features seven former players in Saturday's game. Blake Brandel, Ryan Nall and Travis Mackay from OSU; Beau Duronslet, Jared Reed, Nate Salu and Malik Thirdgill from PSU.
- Trevon Bradford and Chris Mengis competed at Oregon City High School, as did PSU's Mitchell Thompson.
- Keegan Firth and PSU's Austin Powell played at Corvallis' Crescent Valley HS.
- Connor Laverty and Boogie Davis (PSU) competed at Westview High School in Portland.
- One pair of opponents hail from the same high school out of state. OSU linebacker Luke Leonnig and PSU's Ryan Swanson both played at Eagle HS in Idaho.
Last Time Versus Portland State —
- Oregon State defeated the Vikings, 29-14, at Reser Stadium. The game opened the 2014 season for the Beavers.
- Sean Mannion passed for 328 yards and one touchdown, going 26-of-45. Connor Hamlett caught five passes for a team-high 86 yards. Storm Woods gained 125 yards rushing on 16 carries. Garrett Owens connected on five of his seven field-goal attempts.
- Nineteen current Beavers were on the roster for that game in 2014, but did not play.
Home Openers —
- Oregon State has gone 13-4 in home openers dating back to the 2000 season.
- The Beavers opened their home schedule against Portland State three times over that stretch: a 41-14 win in 2005, a 34-7 victory in 2009 and the 29-14 win in 2014. The 2005 game opened the new-look Reser Stadium.
- Head coach Gary Andersen is 8-1 in home openers all-time, going 2-0 at Oregon State, 1-1 at Wisconsin, 4-0 at Utah State and 1-0 at Southern Utah.
Luton's Debut —
- Jake Luton's 304 passing yards against Colorado State Saturday were the second-most by an Oregon State quarterback in a debut.
- Matt Moore holds the record with 367 yards against Portland State in 2005, a 41-14 win.
- Luton's 304 yards mark the 84th time an OSU quarterback has reached the 300-yard plateau.
- The 304 yards tie Luton at No. 79 with Ladd McKittrick, who reached that total in 1983 against California.
Nall For 100, Again —
- Ryan Nall's 115 rushing yards against Colorado State gave him seven such efforts in his career. That ties him with Storm Woods (2012-15) for 10th-most at Oregon State.
- Nall, who has posted three consecutive 100-yard games, can move into a tie for ninth with Bryce Oglesby (1980-83) with his eighth.
- He now has three carries of at least 75 yards in his career after scoring on a 75-yarder against CSU. His others include 89 yards against Washington State and 80 against California, both coming in 2016.
At QB —
- Oregon State saw its third different opening game starting quarterback in as many seasons when Jake Luton started against Colorado State. He threw for two touchdowns and 304 yards against the Rams.
- Seth Collins started in 2015 and was 10-of-18 for 92 yards and two touchdowns, with 17 carries for 152 yards, in a win over Weber State.
- Darell Garretson started in last season's opener at Minnesota. He finished 25-of-40 for 228 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to the Golden Gophers.
30 Sacks, 30 Turnovers —
- The goal at the start of the season is for the Beaver defense to make 30 sacks and force 30 turnovers. That would be a significant production hike from the two previous years of the current coaching regime that resulted in 18/20 in 2016 and 17/12 in 2015.
- Utah and Washington were the only teams in the Pac-12 to achieve the 30/30 mark last year.
From Hawai'i —
- Twelve players hail from the state of Hawai'i, which gives Oregon State the most players to hail from the islands, aside from the University of Hawai'i.
- Hawaiian natives Moku Watson, Kesi Ah-Hoy, Alexander Skelton, Keli'i Montibon and Onesimus Clarke joined the program in 2017.
Dream Come True —
- Unitus Community Credit Union and Oregon State have partnered to create the "Dream Come True" Program to fulfill one child's dream. It is designed for children who are or have battled an unfortunate illness and includes hosting a child for every home Beaver football game during the 2017 season. Dream Come True will help provide a lasting experience to children eighth grade age or younger (per NCAA regulations) and their families who are facing or have faced an unfortunate time of illness. For more information, visit osubeavers.com/dreamcometrue.
- This week's "Dream Come True" recipient is Hayden from Willamina, Ore., a 9-year-old battling Osteosarcoma.
- Hayden was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in August.
- Hayden, who enjoys playing soccer and participating in karate, will be hosted by the team this weekend, which includes the Friday walk thru prior to the game with Portland State.
The Schedule —
- Seven of the Beavers' first eight games of the 2017 season feature opponents who played in a bowl game last season.
- Those seven opponents combined for a 66-27 (.710) record last season.
- The stretch concludes with four 10-plus win teams: Washington (12 wins), USC (10), Colorado (10) and Stanford (10).
- Oregon State opens Pac-12 play Sept. 16 at Washington State. The first five league opponents OSU will face combined for an overall record of 50-17 (36-9 Pac-12) last year, a winning percentage of .746. The final four opponents combined for an overall record of 17-31 (8-28 in Pac-12) last season, a winning percentage of .354.
11 Strong —
- During the team's trip to Bend, Oregon State staff unveiled to the team an alternate uniform.
- The uniform, primarily a dark gray with silver numbers, features a silver Beaver Head on a black helmet, with a single orange stripe.
- The uniform was unveiled prior to the team's screening of Planet of the Apes, via a "movie trailer" at Regal Old Mill Stadium 16. That trailer is available by visiting YouTube.com/OSUBeaversAthletics.
- The uniform is slated to be worn Sept. 9 against Minnesota.
Speaking Of Bend —
- The Beavers worked out in Bend for nearly one week - five practices and a scrimmage - at the end of July and early August.
- It marked the second consecutive year the team traveled to Central Oregon.
- The team stayed in newly-built dorms on the campus of Oregon State University-Cascades, and practiced at Summit High School.
- The team was able to work on team-bonding as well as receiving the benefits of working out at an elevation of 3,623 feet.
One Of Two —
- Oregon State is one of two Power 5 programs to have two byes this season. The other is Stanford, which also opened the 2017 season during Week Zero, playing Rice in Australia.
- Twenty teams have two byes, with the Sun Belt accounting for better than 50 percent - 12 in all. Its schedule allocates two byes for every team.
- Oregon State was originally scheduled for one bye - Oct. 21. The second, Sept. 23, came when the game against Colorado State was moved to the season opener. That announcement came June 1.
True Frosh —
- Five true freshmen made their collegiate debuts Saturday against Colorado State. They include: Isaiah Hodgins, Calvin Tyler, Jr., Tino Allen, David Morris and Kesi Ah-Hoy.
Seniors —
- Seventeen seniors dot Oregon State's roster this season, which is close to the fewest in the Pac-12 Conference.
- USC, UCLA and Washington lay claim to the fewest, with all three having 16 on their respective rosters.
- Stanford (25), Utah (24) and Colorado (23) have the most in the Pac-12.
Honoring Giant Killers —
- The 1967 "Giant Killers" will be honored during Oregon State's Oct. 14 game against Colorado at Reser Stadium.
- The "Giant Killers" went 7-2-1, defeating No. 1 USC, No. 2 Purdue and tying second-ranked UCLA.
Watch Lists —
- The following players earned placement on watch lists prior to the start of the season:
- Ryan Nall: Doak Walker Award and Maxwell Award.
- Manase Hungalu: Butkus Award and Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award.
- Sumner Houston: Rimington Trophy.
- Gus Lavaka: Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award.
- Nick Porebski: Ray Guy Award.
Win The Turnover Battle, Win The Game —
- Over the last 161 games, Oregon State is 52-17 when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent, 12-45 when committing more and 18-18 when even.
