Beavers Sweep K-State, Win Beaver State Classic
August 26, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team swept past Kansas State in three sets to win the Beaver State Classic Saturday evening at Gill Coliseum.
Â
The Beavers, who are now 3-0 for the first time since 2014, bested the Wildcats (2-1) by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20.
Â
"I thought we did a good job tonight," head coach Mark Barnard said. "This is one of the most complete games we've played in a long time."
Â
For the third straight match to begin the season, the Beavers' offense wwas led by senior Mary-Kate Marshall who posted 19 kills. However, the impressive offensive performance was balanced by Kory Cheshire's 10 kills, Maddie Goings' nine putaways, and Haylie Bennett's eight.
Â
"Our attack efficiency went up throughout which is a great indicator of how well we were playing despite getting blocked a lot."
Â
It wasn't just the flashy offense on display Friday night. The Beavers' defense played tremendously with freshman Grace Massey and junior Kayla Ellis hustling in the back row recording 15 and 14 digs respectively. Freshman setter Kylee McLaughlin added a dozen digs to go with her 41 assists.
Â
"Our defense was really good. The way they were playing it was very hard to get the ball on the floor against us tonight."
Â
OSU's Marshall was named as the tournament MVP and redshirt freshman Haylie Bennett was also recognized as part of the Beaver State Classic All-Tournament team.
Game Notes: Oregon State improved its all-time series record with Kansas State to 3-1 … Freshman defensive specialist Grace Massey recorded 15 digs for the second straight outing, matching her career-best … Mary-Kate Marshall led the Beavers with 19 kills for the third time in three matchs … Kory Cheshire was second on the squad with 10 kills for the third straight game … The last time Oregon State opened the season 3-0 was in 2014 when the Beavers rattled off seven in a row out of the gates.
Â
Next Up: The Beavers return to action on Friday when they take on Alabama State to begin the North Harbour Marriott Invitational hosted by the University of Portland. OSU will also face Fresno State and Portland Saturday.
