
Beavers Cruise To 114-70 Victory In Valencia

VALENCIA, Spain – Six players scored in double figures to lead the Oregon State men's basketball team to a 114-70 win over Combinado Valenciano at the Pabellon Municipal Fuente de San Luis on Saturday.

Redshirt sophomore forward Tres Tinkle had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and junior guard Stephen Thompson and freshman guard Ethan Thompson each scored 18 to pace the Beavers in their first game in Spain.

It was the first time Oregon State had been on the court since a practice on Saturday, Aug. 12 at the OSU Basketball Center in Corvallis. The rust showed a little in the first half as the Beavers shot 36.8 percent from the field, including 26.3 percent from beyond the arc, and had 10 assists and 10 turnovers.

The second half was complete domination with Oregon State outscoring the professional Valencia team 66-35, while shooting 60.0 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from deep. The Beavers had 17 assists after the halftime break and only three turnovers.

Tinkle, who missed all of six games last season with a broken wrist, was aggressive from the start and finished the opening half with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Ethan Thompson also scored 13 in the first half.

Sophomore guard JaQuori McLaughlin scored nine of his 12 points in the third quarter and finished the night an efficient 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from the 3-point line. He also dished out a team-high eight assists and snatched three steals.

Gligorije Rakocevic scored all 11 of his points in the second half and added six rebounds. Drew Eubanks got into foul trouble but still finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block.

Head coach Wayne Tinkle started Stephen Thompson, Seth Berger, Eubanks, McLaughlin and Tres Tinkle. Berger, who transferred to Oregon State from UMass, had six points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals in his first game wearing the orange and black.

Other reserves who saw action include sophomore guard Kendal Manuel (seven points), senior guard Ronnie Stacy (three points, four rebounds, four assists), freshman guard Zach Reichle (four points, three rebounds), junior forward Tanner Sanders (three points, two rebounds), freshman guard Xavier Smith (two points, one steal) and freshman forward Isaac Barnes (one rebound).

For the night, Oregon State shot 48.7 percent (38-for-78) from the field, 32.1 percent (9-for-28) from beyond the arc and 69.4 percent (29-for-42) from the stripe. The Beavers had 27 assists, 18 steals and 13 turnovers.

The game utilized FIBA rules with a longer 3-point line (22 feet, 1.7 inches) a shorter shot clock (24 seconds) and four 10-minute periods.

The Beavers return to action on Monday.
