Fried scores for Beavers in victory over Trinity Western
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team netted a 2-1 win over Trinity Western in exhibition action Friday evening at Paul Lorenz Field. The Beavers overcame a halftime deficit to take the victory.
Freshman Kaillen Fried started off her Oregon State career with a goal, scoring just minutes after coming on as a halftime substitute. The Beavers then took the lead in the 74th minute, when a shot deflected off a Spartan defender into the net.
"I thought this was a good start for us," said head coach Linus Rhode. "A lot of the things we had been working on started clicking. It's always fun to play Trinity, because they're a different type of team. They like to counter-attack, so we had to deal with that tonight. Overall I think this was a good way to begin our season."
The Beavers out-shot Trinity Western 16-7 in the contest and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Oregon State got off to a strong start, creating a pair of scoring chances within the first seven minutes. Nicole Nickerson came close to putting the Beavers ahead in the 15th minute, but her shot from 12 yards out curled just wide.
The Spartans got on the board first, finding the net against the run of play with a free kick from the right side in the 26th minute. The Beavers created a few more scoring chances late in the half, but Trinity Western took the lead into the intermission.
Senior Emma Jones picked up the second half right where she left off, taking a shot from the top of the box that was blocked. Fried leveled the score just minutes later, placing a shot past the keeper from the left side of the box.
The Beavers continued to press on, as Latham forced a diving save in the 60th minute. Oregon State took the lead in the 74th minutes off a Spartan own-goal. OSU locked down defensively from there to close out the victory.
Oregon State will open the regular season on Aug. 18, when it hosts Kansas State at Lorenz Field.
