Hallock in 17th after Day 1 of NCAA heptathlon
June 09, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon State's Kara Hallock is in 17th place after the first day of the heptathlon at the NCAA Track & Field National Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.
A senior from Lebanon, Ore., Hallock totaled 3,112 points in the first four events of the seven-event competition. She scored 942 points in the 100-meter hurdles (14.26); 701 points in the high jump (5-1.75); 660 points in the shot put (39-3.75), and 809 points in the 200 (25.86).
Her shot put mark was a PR and surpassed her former best of 38-5, set at the Pacific-12 Conference heptathlon, by nearly a foot.
The heptathlon concludes on Saturday with the long jump (11:30 a.m.), the javelin (12:45 p.m.) and the 800 meters (5:13 p.m.).
Hallock will earn honorable-mention All-American honors at the very least if she competes the event. The top eight finishers earn first-team honors; places 9-16 earn second-team honors and those who finish 17th-24th garner honorable mention.
She is the first Beaver to compete at the NCAA Championships since Laura Carlyle in 2012. Carlyle earned honorable-mention All-American honors in the 5,000 meters in 2011 and in the 1,500 meters in 2012.
Hallock qualified for the 24-woman final by taking second place at the Pac-12 heptathlon championships on May 6-7. Her 5,551-point performance was a PR by 172 points and was the No. 2 all-time score in OSU history.
The school record is 5,592 points, set by Sonya Harrigfeld Crowther at Walnut, Calif., on April 22-23, 1982.
A scorer in two events at the 2017 Pac-12 championships, Hallock will graduate next week. One of OSU's most-decorated performers since the program was revived in 2005 after a lengthy hiatus, she came to OSU in 2014 after a standout career at Lebanon High School and Lane Community College.
She ranks ninth all-time in the 200 meters (25.20); second all-time in the 100 hurdles (13.87) and in the long jump (19-10.75) and eighth all-time in the javelin (139-1). She also ran a leg on the No. 7 all-time 1,600-meter relay team.
Indoors, she is seventh in the 200 meters (26.21); fourth in the 60 hurdles (8.63), and second in the long jump (18-11.75), pentathlon (3,914 points) and 1,600-meter relay (3:50.92).
