The honor is given annually to college baseball's top breakout player
OMAHA, Neb. – Jake Thompson leads the nation with 13 wins in 2017, and on Monday morning, he was named one of 25 semifinalists for the Gregg Olson Award, which is presented annually to college baseball's breakout player of the year.
Â
The honor, announced by the College Baseball Hall of Fame, recognizes the "top amateur baseball player who elevates his games to an elite level throughout the season."
Â
Thompson, a native of Florence, Ore., scattered one run over 7 2/3 innings in Oregon State's 8-2 victory over Holy Cross Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. His earned run average sits at 1.30 on the year and the redshirt junior right-hander has held opponents to a .180 batting average in 110 2/3 innings. Entering the season, he had posted six wins over his first three seasons.
Â
An economics major, he was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American on Friday – the team's first since 2007 – and has also been selected as an All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Additionally, he is a Pac-12 First-Team honoree as well as a Pac-12 All-Academic First-Team selection.
