Oregon State Starts CWS With Comeback Win

OMAHA, Neb. – The Oregon State baseball team opened the College World Series in style Saturday afternoon, as the Beavers overcame a four-run deficit to defeat Cal State Fullerton 6-5 in Omaha, Neb.

OSU's offense came alive in the sixth inning, as the Beavers scored four runs in the frame to level the score at five. Catcher Adley Rutschman, who also came up with a big defensive play in the contest, drove in the game-winning run with a single in the eighth.

Redshirt-junior Jack Anderson went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Nick Madrigal tallied two hits and drove in a run. Jake Mulholland earned the victory, after not allowing a hit in 4 1/3 innings of relief work. As a team, Oregon State tallied 11 hits, compared to three for the Titans.

The victory marked Oregon State's (55-4) 22nd-consecutive win.

The Titans scored three runs in the first to jump in front, but the Beavers would answer with a run in the second, as Steven Kwan drove in Michael Gretler on a fielder's choice. Cal State Fullerton came back with two runs in the fourth to extend the advantage to four.

Oregon State exploded in the sixth to level the score. Gretler, Tyler Malone and Kwan got things started, as all three hitters walked to load the bases. Madrigal brought Gretler home with a sacrifice fly, before Trevor Larnach plated two with a single up the middle. Anderson then evened things up with an RBI knock, his third hit of the contest.

The Beavers completed the comeback in the eighth inning with a two-out rally. Larnach singled and moved into scoring position when Anderson was hit by a pitch. Rutschman came through with his first hit of the contest to drive in the game-winning run.

Mulholland struck out three, after relieving starter Jake Thompson in the fourth inning. With the no-decision, Thompson maintains his perfect 14-0 season record. Drew Rasmussen struck out two in the ninth to earn the save.

Keep It Rolling
The win marked Oregon State's 22nd in-a-row, giving the Beavers the top-two winning streaks in the nation this season. With a win on Monday, OSU would match its longest streak of the year. Oregon State won 23 consecutive games from February to mid-April.

Keep Stretching
The Beavers' win Saturday afternoon marked the team's 55th of the year, extending the Oregon State single-season record. Oregon State's previous best win total was set in 2013, when the Beavers wen 52-13.
Madrigal Mashing
Nick Madrigal continued his hot stretch. The sophomore went 2-for-4 on Saturday, and is now 9-for-15 at the plate over his last four games.

Jack Anderson matched a season-best with his three-hit performance on Saturday. Anderson had reached the three-hit mark two-times previously this season, with the last coming on April 1 vs. Stanford. The redshirt-junior reached in all five of his plate appearances, as he was hit by a pitch twice in the contest.

Oregon State is in the midst of its sixth College World Series appearance. With the win on Saturday, the Beavers moved to 14-8 all-time in Omaha.

Oregon State head coach Pat Casey was named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Coach of the Year prior Saturday's game. Casey has now been named the national coach of the year by at least one publication in four different years, earning the honor in 2005, 2006 and 2007 prior to Saturday's honor.
