** No Rowing Experience Necessary **
Steps for trying out for the team:
* Sign up for the PAC 205 Class in order to receive credit for trying out
* Attend the Walk-on Informational Meeting at the Reser Club Level on the first day of classes - Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.
* If you have prior rowing experience, please fill out the Recruit Questionnaire and our coaches will be in contact with you.
* Each fall we host a Physical Activity Course (PAC) with the goal of teaching the sport of rowing at the Division I level.
* By completing the first four weeks of the course, you will learn if rowing is for you and earn an OSU class credit.
Reasons to tryout
* Train to be in the best shape of your life
* Compete as part of something bigger than yourself
* Create lifetime friendships
* Time management skills
How to best prepare for tryouts:
Ultimately, we are looking for athletes with strong fitness potential
* Cardio training (biking, running, swimming, etc.)
* Core strength (sit-ups, crunches, planks, etc.)
* Flexibility (Hamstring flexibility, posture, etc.)
* Body weight strength (pushups, pull-ups, lunges, squats, etc.)
What do you look for in prospective team members?
Prospective rowers come from all kinds of athletic backgrounds
* Hard working, intrinsically-motivated and team-oriented
* Strong overall athleticism
* Height & long limbs are an advantage (generally 5'9" or taller)
* Determined and goal-oriented mindset with a passion for physical challenges
We invite smaller athletes (around 115 lbs) with strong leadership and competitive nature to tryout as a Coxswain.
The Coxswain is the leader inside the boat responsible for steering, facilitating practice, providing technical feedback and motivating the rowers from within the boat.
Does it cost money to join the team?
The only fee involved is registering for the PAC class.
Once named to the team, you will be part of a fully-funded varsity sport at OSU where your cost to participate is covered.
What support services are available?
Oregon State Student-Athletes are provided with the best support possible:
* Each sport has an academic advisor assigned to their team. The academic counselor is responsible for assisting student-athletes with study habits, selection of classes/early-priority registration, and ensuring our student-athletes are staying on track academically.
* Student-athletes have access to tutoring at no cost.
* Full-time medical staff with rehabilitation services
* Nutritionists, strength and conditioning coaches, along with career and leadership support to help enhance the all-around student-athlete experience.
How many people make the team and do I get to compete?
* This number varies depending on the quality of athletes who participate in the walk-on process
* Everyone who makes the team will have the opportunity to race
* Racing occurs in the fall as well as spring. The main, championship racing season for rowing is in the spring.
