Hallock, McNairy shine on Day 1 of heptathlon
May 06, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior Kara Hallock and redshirt sophomore Saskia McNairy each PRed in three events on Saturday on the opening day of the Pacific-12 Conference heptathlon championships at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
Hallock established lifetime bests in the 100 hurdles (13.90), the shot put (38-5) and the 200 (25.20). She is in fourth place with 3,240 points with three events remaining.
McNairy PRed in the 100 hurdles (15.16), the high jump (5-3) and the 200 (25.21). She is in ninth place with 2,977 points, just 36 points out of eighth.
Hallock said she was "pretty happy" with an afternoon that left her just eight points behind USC's Lyndsey Lopes in the chase for third place.
"There were some bumps along the road, but that's going to happen," she said. "I have been chasing a sub-14 in the hurdles for five years and it finally happened. That set the tone well, it was pretty exciting."
The long jump, javelin and 800 compete the competition on Sunday. The long jump and 800 are two of her best events.
Â
"I'm hoping for a big long jump," to match or exceed her PR of 19-9.50, she said. "A 130-foot jav throw, and hopefully a sub-2:20 in the 800.
Â
"I think I'm in good shape. I'd like to be a little further up but that just makes me start tomorrow that much better."
Â
Hallock set a career-best of 5,379 points at the Jim Click Multis at Arizona on April 6-7. That score ranks third all-time at OSU, and fourth in the Pac-12 this season behind Washington State's Alissa Brooks-Johnson (5,616) and Liz Harper (5,420) and UCLA's Christina Chenault (5,420).
McNairy also set her career best of 4,708 at the Jim Click meet. That ranks sixth at OSU all-time, and ninth among athletes entered in this weekend. The top eight score.
Â
"I'm just super-excited about everything that happened today," she said. "I was hoping for a little more in the shot put, but with everything else being PRs for me, I'm super-happy.
Â
"This gives me a lot of momentum. I'm sitting in ninth and I hope to get into eighth. I have two of my best events, the javelin and long jump, remaining. And we've put a lot of training into the 800, I feel comfortable running it and hopefully I can PR."
Â
Hallock became the fourth woman in OSU history to break the 14-second barrier in the hurdles and her 13.90 ranks No. 4 all-time. She tied Allie Church for ninth all-time in the 200 with her 25.20 clocking.
Â
With those two efforts, the Beavers have set six school records and posted 56Â all-time top-10 times or marks this season.
Â
The heptathlon concludes on Sunday with the long jump (11:45 a.m.) javelin (1:15 p.m.) and 800 meters (2:30 p.m.). The accompanying decathlon concludes with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 on Sunday.
