Beavers Win Home Run Filled Game
May 06, 2017 | Baseball
Â
Nick Madrigal's seventh-inning RBI single – his fourth hit of the game – turned out to be the game winner as Oregon State (37-4 overall, 20-3 Pac-12 Conference) scored three in the frame after California's Denis Karas hit a grand slam in the seventh to answer Kwan's round tripper. The Golden Bears scored two in the eighth, but Drew Rasmussen, who came on in the seventh, held Cal scoreless in the ninth to earn the win.
Â
Overall, the teams hit six home runs – four by the Golden Bears and two by OSU - with KJ Harrison starting the game's scoring with a two-run shot in the first. Cameron Eden hit Cal's (21-23, 12-10) first home run of the game in the third, then, after the Beavers scored two in the bottom half of the inning, saw the Bears tie the game with a pair of home runs by Karas and Tanner Dodson in the fourth.
Â
Dodson, who started in center, was the pitcher who gave up Madrigal's single in the seventh. The loss, however, was charged to Arman Sabouri, who dropped to 1-3 after allowing one run in a 1/3 of an inning of work.
Â
Kwan's grand slam – the first home run of his career – came in the sixth off reliever Erik Martinez. Kwan battled Martinez to a 2-2 count before lifting the ball just over the right field fence, just to the fair side of the foul pole, for the 8-4 lead.
Â
Overall, the Beavers tallied eight hits off six California pitchers, adding seven walks.
Â
Rasmussen earned the win after allowing five hits and three runs – two earned – in 2 1/3 innings. He improved to 1-0 on the year.
Â
Another 3K-Plus
The 3,593 in attendance at Saturday's game marked the largest regular season attendance in the Goss Stadium era, and the second overall, trailing only the 3,602 against Kansas State in the 2013 Corvallis Super Regional. Oregon State has now had nine crowds of 3,000 or more this season. The Beavers have totaled 54,617 fans through 18 home dates this season – 19 games, with one counting as as a single-ticket doubleheader. That is an average of 3,034 per home date.
Â
Madrigal With Another Four-Hit Game
Nick Madrigal's four-hit game marked the third time in the sophomore's career he has reached that mark. He set it most recently on April 22, 2016 at Utah.
Â
Kwan With The Big Fly
Steven Kwan's grand slam marked the Beavers' first since KJ Harrison Feb. 22, 2015 against Kansas in Surprise, Ariz. Kwan's four RBI marked his second multi-RBI effort of the season, and set a new career-high for the sophomore, whose two against Washington April 15 in Seattle had been his career-best.
Â
Going For A Sweep Sunday
Oregon State's win Saturday gave the Beavers their 10th consecutive Pac-12 series win dating back to the 2016 season. The Beavers are going for a sweep Sunday, which would be the team's fifth in Pac-12 play this year.
Â
Against Cal
Not only would the sweep be the Beavers' fifth of the year, it would also give Oregon State its fifth over California since 2009. Six of the last eight series between the teams have been sweeps, with the Golden Bears doing so in 2016.
Â
Bullpen
Drew Rasmussen's win on Saturday gave the Oregon State bullpen its 14th victory of the season. The bullpen is 14-1 on the year.
