AUSTIN, Tex. – Senior Morgan Anderson concluded her stellar Oregon State career on Saturday by placing 38th in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary Meet at the University of Texas.
She was seeded 42nd entering the competition and ran 17:27.01 in a slow, tactical race on a hot and humid night at Mike A. Myers Stadium. She was OSU's lone competitor on Saturday.
A versatile runner from Scotts Mills, Ore., who graduated from Silverton High School, Anderson leaves OSU with the No. 5 all-time clocking in the 800 (2:11.54) and the No. 2 time in the 1,500 (4:21.84) and 5,000 (16:17.50).
She ranks No. 4 in the indoor 800 (2:15.26); No. 2 time in the indoor mile (4:47.32) and No. 4 time in the indoor 3,000 (9:43.11). She also anchored the school-record 4,000-meter distance medley relay team (11:24.59).
A four-year starter in cross country, she ranks 12th all-time over 5,000 meters (17:17). She also earned numerous Pacific-12 Conference and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation all-academic accolades.
On Friday, redshirt sophomore Venessa D'Arpino broke her own school record in the 200 meters. She placed fourth in her heat and 26th overall in 23.60 to eclipse her old mark of 23.63, set at the Fresno State Bulldog Invitational on April 22.
It was the sixth time this season D'Arpino set the school record. She broke Rosie Williams' old record of 23.96, set in 1988, by running 23.83 at Stanford on April 1. She then ran 23.82, 23.81, 23.72 and 23.63 in subsequent meets before lowering it one more time on Friday night.
D'Arpino set the school record in the 100 (11.70), 200 (23.60) and 400 (54.14) this spring. On Thursday, she outperformed her seeding by 22 places and took 26th in the 400 at 54.21.
Also on Friday, sophomore Juliana Mount placed eighth in her heat and 24th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:43.17. She was ranked 33rd and bettered her seed by nine places.
On Thursday, senior Kara Hallock placed 27th overall in the long jump at 19-8.25. Javelin specialists McKenzie Byrd took 13th in her heat and 44th overall with a mark of 131-8. Sophomore Kindel Bailey, who battled elbow problems in May, had two fouls and passed on her final attempt.
D'Arpino, Mount and Hallock all finished at least nine places above their seeding.
The Beavers set the current school record in six events (100, 200, 400, 3,000 steeplechase, pole vault, javelin) and posted 72 all-time, top-10 times or marks in an outdoor season that began on March 17.
Hallock will now train for the NCAA Championships, set for June 7-10 at Hayward Field in Eugene. She qualified for the finals in the heptathlon by placing second at the Pac-12 championships with a score of 5,551 points.
The NCAA heptathlon is scheduled for June 9-10. The 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters are on Day 1. The long jump, javelin and 800 meters are on Day 2.
