May 22, 2017 | Baseball
The right-hander improved to 12-0 this season with a win Saturday
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State redshirt junior Jake Thompson has been named the Pac-12 Conference's Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Monday.
Â
The right-hander from Florence, Ore., tossed his first career complete game in the Beavers' 5-0 win over Washington State on Saturday. The economics major limited the Cougars to two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Â
Washington State was unable to get a runner in scoring position against Thompson.
Â
The honor is the second of Thompson's season and seventh earned by an Oregon State pitcher, tying the 2011 UCLA Bruins for the most in a year since the then-Pac-10 unified in 1999.
Â
With Saturday's win, Thompson became the first, and so far only, 12-game winner nationally. He lowered his earned run average to 1.01, the third-lowest mark across the nation. He has 94 strikeouts to 29 walks in 98 innings, and opponents are batting just .166 against him.
Â
Thompson finished Pac-12 play with an 8-0 record and 0.88 ERA in 72 innings. Opponents batted just .171 against him as he allowed 42 hits in 10 starts.
Â
He is a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's best player, in addition to being on the watch list for the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Pitcher of the Year award.
