Thompson Becomes Nation’s First 12-Game Winner
May 20, 2017 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Jake Thompson tossed his first career complete game, Adley Rutschman went 3-for-4 and Trevor Larnach drove in two to pace Oregon State to a 5-0 win over Washington State in front of a Goss Stadium record crowd of 3,654 Saturday afternoon.
Thompson, backed by an OSU offense that recorded nine hits and six walks, became the nation's first 12-game winner, and just the ninth pitcher in Oregon State history to reach that mark. He held the Cougars to two hits and two walks with five strikeouts. His complete-game effort marked the redshirt junior's longest career outing, surpassing 8 1/3 innings against Utah earlier this season.
The Florence, Ore., native dropped his earned run average to 1.01 this season.
The win pushed Oregon State to 44-4 overall and 26-3 in Pac-12 Conference play. The 26 wins ties the 1981 Arizona State Sun Devil team for the most wins ever in league play.
The victory also assures the Beavers of series wins in all 10 conference matchups this season. OSU has won 12 straight dating back to 2016, and can tally its seventh sweep this season on Sunday.
Larnach opened the game's scoring with a two-run double in the fourth that hugged the left field line, just barely falling fair. OSU scored another in the six and two more in the seventh to give Thompson plenty of room.
Rutschman singled three times, driving in one, while Nick Madrigal went 2-for-5 at the top of the lineup.
Washington State (24-25 overall, 10-16 Pac-12) starter Cody Anderson was charged with the loss after allowing four hits and three runs in five innings. He dropped to 5-3.
Another Shutout
The team's shutout on Saturday extended Oregon State's national lead to 11 on the year. The Beavers have tallied double-figure shutouts in three of the last five years, also recording 12 in 2013 and 15 in 2014.
12-Game Winners

Next up for Thompson is equaling Dallas Buck and Jonah Nickerson, who each had 13 wins in 2006.
