May 18, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State heptathlete Kara Hallock has qualified for the NCAA Championships, scheduled for June 9-10 at Hayward Field in Eugene.
A senior from Lebanon High School via Lane Community College, Hallock is seeded 22nd in the 24-women field with a score of 5,551 points. She posted that score while taking second place at the Pacific-12 Conference heptathlon championships at the Whyte Track & Field Center on May 6-7.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment by Kara and we are very happy for her, and proud of her," OSU multi-events coach Eric Schueffner said. "She put in an incredible amount of hard work with us over the past three seasons to get to where she is today.
"Her improvement since her arrival at OSU is remarkable. It is a credit to her perseverance, dedication and commitment to her sport."
Hallock set PRs in four of the seven events (200 meters, 100 hurdles, javelin, long jump) at the Pac-12 multi-events championships. She bettered her former PR, set earlier this season, by 272 points while taking second behind Washington State junior Alissa Brooks-Johnson.
Hallock then improved upon her hurdles and long jump PRs at the Pac-10 championships in Eugene last weekend. She placed third in the long jump (19-10.75) and ninth in the 100 hurdles (13.87).
Hallock's PRs in the seven heptathlon events are: 100 hurdles, 13.87; 200 meters, 25.20; 800 meters, 2:22.34; long jump, 19-10.75; high jump, 5-4.50; javelin, 139-1, and shot put, 38-5.
The NCAA heptathlon starts at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9, with the 100 hurdles. Other events on that day are the high jump (1:30 p.m.); shot put (3:30 p.m.) and 200 (7:13 p.m.).
The heptathlon concludes on Saturday, June 10, with the long jump (11:30 a.m.), javelin (12:45 p.m.) and 800 (5:13 p.m.).
She is the second Beaver athlete to qualify for the NCAA outdoor championships since the program's revival in 2005 following a long hiatus. Laura Carlyle competed in the 5,000 meters in 2011 and the 1,500 meters in 2012 and earned honorable-mention All-American honors in both events. She also qualified for the 5,000 in 2012, but did not compete.
