Beavers’ Top Two Crews Finish 6th at Pac-12 Championships
May 14, 2017 | Women's Rowing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Varsity 8 finished sixth, it's best finish since 2009, and the Beavers finished seventh overall at Pac-12 Championships on the shores of Lake Natoma near Sacramento Sunday.
"We were on a mission," interim head coach Alliston Foster said. "Our goal all season has been to go faster and faster each race and all three of our boats had their best races today. To go the fastest we've been all season really made it fun today. This team learned to race this season and today everything came together."
The Varsity 8 crew turned in the Beavers' most impressive results racing to sixth place. The boat which was crewed by Alina Hagstrom, Eliza Adams, Paige Phillips, Bayly Camp, Hannah Smith, Olivia Ashby, Mimi Ballinger and Tess O'Leary and was coxed by Bailey Daniels, battled UCLA's top crew through the length of the 2,000-meter race crossing the finish more than 3-seconds ahead of the Bruins' boat. Falling behind off the starting line, Oregon State made an early move to reclaim ground on the Bruins and kept pushing. The Beavers walked through the Bruins and had a response for every push the UCLA crew could muster before concluding the race with a solid sprint to open the difference to a full boat-length.
The tightest race of the day for the Beavers involved the Second Varsity 8. Four crews – OSU, Washington State, USC and UCLA reached the 1,000-meter mark in a virtual dead heat. Oregon State and USC went back and forth, as the Cougars and Bruins moved out, to battle through the second half of the race. The Beavers' crew of Abigail Watts, Scout Sutton, Maddie Vinson, Joely Hannan, Alyssa Beamer, Mimi Grosselius, Claire Diller and Katie Descheemaeker and directed by Jean Cook, pulled together in a brilliant sprint in the final 300-meters to beat out the Trojans by less than 2-seconds.
OSU's Varsity 4+ raced hard covering the course with a time of 7-minutes, 44.437-seconds to finish seventh.
