Hallock takes third place Pac-12 long jump
May 13, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Kara Hallock took third place in the long jump on Saturday to lead the Oregon State track & field on Day 1 of the Pacific-12 Conference championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Hallock flew 19 feet, 10.75 inches on her second jump to assume second place and she fell just one spot over the subsequent four rounds. It was the second-longest jump in school history, exceeding her previous No. 2 mark by 1.25 inches.
She also took ninth in the 100 hurdles in a 13.87, tied for the second-fastest time in school history. She had the eighth-fastest time, but the second-place finisher from a different heat advanced ahead of her with a slower time.
Hallock scored six points and now has 14 for the championships. She scored eight points on May 7 for taking second in the heptathlon.
The Beavers have 16 points and are in seventh place heading into Sunday's action. They took 11th place at the 2016 championships with 23.50 points, the most in a conference meet since the program's reinstatement in 2005.
"We had a good day today and were a few inches and a few hundredths of a second away from having a great day," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "Setting seven top-10 marks at a conference meet is impressive.
"Kara was sensational; she had two of the top four marks in the long jump and missed out on scoring in the hurdles by a whisker. Amber Peschka, Juliana Mount and Saskia McNairy were oh-so-close to scoring in their events.
"Morgan Anderson positioned herself to score in the 1,500 meters on Sunday. And Sam Lewis and Emily Weber each PRed in the 10,000, it's great so see seniors do that in their final meet."
Mount and Peschka placed ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and javelin, respectively. McNairy, who was seventh in the heptathlon on May 7, took 10th in the long jump.
Anderson qualified for the 12-woman finals in the 1,500 meters in 4:21.84, a PR by 1.10 seconds and the second-fastest time in school history. She had the fourth-best time in qualifying, and no matter her finish on Sunday, she will improve upon last year, when she placed 15th.
Mount, running the steeplechase for just the second time in her career, fell going over the hurdle on the first water jump and was completely submerged. But recovered to finish in 10:43.29 and challenge for a place and points.
Peschka threw 143-1 to better her No. 3 all-time mark by six inches. School record-holder Kindel Bailey was a scratch because of injury.
McNairy's long jump mark of 18-10.75 was a PR by three inches, and the No. 6 mark in school history. She was less than two inches out of eighth place.
Lewis (35:33.81) and Weber (35:36.23) ran the fourth- and fifth-fastest 10,000-meter races in school history in their first race at that distance this season.
Redshirt sophomore Venessa D'Arpino placed 11th in the 200 prelims in 24.02. Earlier, she also took 11th in the 400 prelims in 55:28; she did not advance to Sunday's finals in either event.
Senior Devin Collins scratched from her heat in the 400-meter hurdles because of injury. Redshirt sophomore Dakota Steen was 17th in 1:04.16.
The meet concludes today. OSU's top entrants are:
