Beavers Take Game One Of Civil War Series
May 11, 2017 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Adley Rutschman and Michael Gretler each hit home runs to send top-ranked Oregon State to a 6-1 win over Oregon Thursday night in the opening-game of a three-game series at PK Park.
The win in the Civil War opener, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway/Albertsons and Your Local Toyota Dealers, pushed Oregon State's record to 39-4 overall and 22-3 in Pac-12 Conference play. With the victory, Oregon State claimed at least a share of the Pac-12 crown and by virtue of series wins over Stanford and UCLA, gained the Pac-12's automatic bid to the NCAA's postseason tournament.
Rutschman and Gretler both hit solo home runs in the fourth inning, each posting their second of the 2017 season. The homers started off a two-RBI night for both, as Rutschman, who went 3-for-5 on the night, singled home run a fifth, and Gretler drove home his second via a single in the eighth. Jack Anderson capped off the night's scoring with a two-run double in the eighth.
Luke Heimlich started for the Beavers, going six innings. The lefty allowed seven hits and a run with seven strikeouts, pushing his record to 8-1 after picking up the win. He was backed by Brandon Eisert, who struck out four over three innings to earn his third save of the season.
Cole Stringer, who started for Oregon and allowed both fourth-inning home runs, took the loss after allowing five hits and two runs in four innings. The lefty dropped to 4-2 on the year.
Rutschman And Gretler In The Fourth
Adley Rutschman and Michael Gretler's solo home runs in the fourth inning marked the first two home run inning for the Beavers since KJ Harrison and Logan Ice both went deep in the seventh inning of a 20-0 win over Portland on May 13, 2015 in Keizer, Ore.
More On Rutschman
Adley Rutschman tallied his third three-hit game of the season, giving him seven multi-hit efforts on the season. He now also has six multi-RBI games after tallying two on Thursday.

Sam Gaviglio became the 33rd former Beaver to play at the Major League level when he came on in relief against Toronto for the Seattle Mariners Thursday night. The right-hander, who hails from Ashland, Ore., struck out fellow Beaver Darwin Barney in his second inning of work. Gaviglio worked two innings, allowing one run with four strikeouts.
Madrigal Swipes No. 14
Nick Madrigal stole second in the eighth inning Thursday night, his 14th stolen base of the season. He now leads the Pac-12 Conference in that category.
Heimlich's Night
Luke Heimlich's six innings of work was his second-shortest stint of the season, behind 5 2/3 innings against Indiana to open the season. But the lefty finished with his 12th quality start of the year, and he's allowed two runs in a game just once, against Utah. His earned run average climbed slightly to 0.76 from 0.71 after his lone run allowed against the Ducks.
Triple Digits
Oregon's run in the fifth inning – on a hit by pitch – was the 100th allowed by the Beavers this season. Oregon State came into the series as the nation's only team to allow less than 100 on the year. OSU is still the last team to have allowed less than 100 earned runs, at 86.
