Swanson Leads Beavers On Day One In Tempe
April 07, 2017 | Women's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. – Hannah Swanson shot an even-par 72 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational on Friday.
Â
The Beavers finished the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 3-over 291 at the par-72, 6,223-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course to sit in sixth place in the 14-team field.
Â
Host Arizona State and Baylor are tied for first with a 10-under 278, while Washington and Arizona are tied for third with a 1-under 287 and UNLV is fifth with a 1-over 289.
Â
The second round begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. Oregon State will start at 8:45 a.m. and be paired with Arizona and UNLV.
Â
"I'm really proud of how we played today," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "We stuck to the process and didn't get caught up in the result of each individual shot. If we focus staying patient and taking advantage of scoring opportunities when they are presented to us, we should be able to make a move up the leaderboard in a quality field."
Â
Swanson was 1 over going out but dropped in birdies on the par-4 11th, par-5 14th and par-3 16th holes to shoot a 1-under coming in and finish with a 72 for a tie for 18th place.
Â
Junior Susie Cavanagh, sophomore Olivia Benzin and freshman Nicole Schroeder are all tied for 26th place after carding a 1-over 73.
Â
Cavanagh had three birdies and four bogeys to post her best round since a 1-under 72 at the Pac-12 Preview this past October. Benzin was 3 over through seven but had two birdies and nine pars the rest of the way. Schroeder had a team-best four birdies, three bogeys and a double.
Â
Senior Elyse Smidinger recorded four birdies but two double-bogeys on the back nine held her to a 5-over 77.
Â
Seventeen of the 81 golfers finished the first round in red figures, led by an 8-under 64 by Monica Vaughn of Arizona State.
