Beavers competing at three meets this week
April 05, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Athletes from the Oregon State track team will compete in three meets in what promises to be a very busy weekend.
A 16-member contingent of Beavers is bound for Arizona State's 38th annual Sun Angel Classic in Tempe. Seven more will compete at the John Knight Twilight Meet at nearby Western Oregon, and two others left Wednesday for the Jim Click Multi-events competition at the University of Arizona.
"They all should face top-flight competition and that's what we need as we continue to improve and to prepare for our bigger meets at the end of the season," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "We had some great performances at Stanford and at San Francisco State last weekend," led by redshirt sophomore Venessa D'Arpino's school-record 23.83 in the 200 meters, and a top-10 all-time run in the 800 by redshirt sophomore Gwyneth McMorris (2:13.92).
"Most of the distance runners who competed last weekend will take this weekend off but the rest of our team will be in action. We plan to build off of the great performances we've had in the first three weeks of the season, and to keep growing."
Senior Kara Hallock and redshirt sophomore Saskia McNairy left Corvallis on Wednesday for their first heptathlon of the season at Arizona. The 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 are scheduled for Thursday; the long jump, javelin and 800 are set for Friday.
Hallock (5,087 points) and McNairy (4,270) rank third and fifth, respectively, all-time in the event. They rank second and third in the five-event indoor pentathlon, with 3,914 and 3,118 points, respectively.
The Sun Angel Classic starts on Friday with the hammer and pole vault. The remaining field events, and all running events involving Beavers, take place on Saturday. OSU set the school 400-meter relay record (46.01) at the 2016 Sun Angel Classic but will not enter a team this year.
The John Knight Twilight Meet is Friday only. Sophomore Kaely Gordon will make her season debut, in the 1500 meters and the 3000-meter steeplechase.
The Beavers set one current school record (D'Arpino's 200) and have posted 15 all-time top-10 times or marks in the first three weeks of the outdoor season.
