
Five Beavers Open 2017 On MLB Rosters

Jacoby Ellsbury, Darwin Barney, Michael Conforto, Matt Boyd and Andrew Susac open the season at the MLB level
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Former Oregon State players Jacoby Ellsbury, Darwin Barney, Michael Conforto, Matt Boyd and Andrew Susac are on Major League Baseball Opening Day rosters for the 2017 season, which officially started on Sunday.
Ellsbury, an outfielder who played for the Beavers from 2003-05, enters his fourth season with the New York Yankees and 11th overall at the Major League level. He has played more than 1,100 games with the Yankees and Boston Red Sox, accumulating 1,282 hits, 221 doubles, 43 triples and 321 stolen bases.
Barney, who is primarily a middle infielder with the Toronto Blue Jays, played for Oregon State from 2005-07. He's entering his third season with Toronto and eighth overall after making his debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2010. The Portland native has played in 685 career games, collecting 547 hits, 103 doubles and 176 runs batted in.
Conforto is in his third Major League season and fourth at the professional level after being drafted in the first round by the New York Mets in 2014. He has played in 165 MLB games after an OSU career that spanned from 2012-14. The Seattle area native has 35 doubles, 21 home runs and 68 RBI in 478 at bats.
Boyd, who pitched at OSU from 2010-13, was recently named the fifth starter for the Detroit Tigers and is scheduled to throw Saturday against the Red Sox. Boyd has pitched in 33 games at the MLB level, starting 30, and is 7-11 with a 5.64 ERA. He was 6-5 with a 4.53 ERA in 20 games last season.
Susac will start the season on the disabled list but is primed to be a key component of the Milwaukee Brewers both offensively and defensively this season. The Sacramento area native played for OSU from 2010-11, and has appeared in 96 MLB games, collecting 57 hits, 16 doubles, seven home runs and 35 RBI.
Beavers Are No. 1 For The Second Straight Week
Five of the six polls have come out, as of 11:15 a.m. PT on Monday, and the Beavers find themselves at No. 1 in all five. Those polls include Baseball America, D1Baseball.com, Perfect Game, USA Today Coaches and Collegiate Baseball. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) typically releases its weekly rankings on Monday afternoon.
