Bailey sets javelin mark on Day 2 of HPM
April 29, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore Kindel Bailey set an Oregon State record in the javelin on Saturday to lead a plethora of outstanding performances on Day 2 of the High Performance Meet at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
Bailey threw 151-feet even in the opening round to break McKenzie Byrd's former school record by 2.75 inches. Bailey's former PR was 149-8.75, the old No. 2 all-time mark.
"I've really been working on my block, and my full approach," said Bailey, whose PR entering the season was 131-10, set at the 2016 Pacific-12 Conference championships, where she placed 10th after missing finals by one foot.
"We've been putting in a lot of time and I've made some big improvements since high school," when she was a 4A state champion for the Banks Braves. "And having new, fresh eyes on me has helped," she said, alluding to new throws coach David Dumble.
"And it really helps to have teammates who are right up there with the best," she added, noting that eight of OSU's all-time top 10 performers in the event are on this year's team. "We push each other every day."
Bailey's was one of three all-time top-10 marks the Beavers established in the javelin, the first event in Day 2 of the fifth-annual meet, which featured more than 600 competitors.
Senior Kayla Fleskes took 10th in 139-9, bettering her No. 6 all-time mark by more than a foot. Freshman Mikayla Pivec – a starter on OSU's Pac-12-championship basketball team, and a former Washington state champion competing in her first college meet – was 13th at 134-4, the No. 8 all-time mark.
Junior Destiny Dawson, a transfer from Hawaii who is redshirting, won the event at 162-9, a PR by more than 12 feet. However, her mark does not count in the record book because she was competing unattached.
The Beavers set two school records and recorded nine all-time top-10 times or marks in their lone home appearance of the spring. They have set six school records and 51 all-time top-10 times or marks this season.
Senior Ally Jackson won the high jump with a PR of 5-7.25, the No. 8 mark. Senior Devin Collins was second in the 100 hurdles (14.01), fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:01.14) and ran a 56-second second leg in the 4x400 relay, which placed third in a season-best 3:55.31.
Redshirt sophomore Venessa D'Arpino won the 400 in a meet-record 54.17, just .03 off her school record. She also placed second in the 200 meters in 23.72, the fourth consecutive meet she has gone under 24 seconds.
Redshirt sophomore Nicole Goecke PRed in the 800 at 2:12.74, the No. 10 all-time clocking. Bailey also improved her No. 7 all-time mark in the hammer by eight feet to 103-0 on Friday at Western Oregon.
OSU's 13 graduated/graduating/post-graduate seniors were honored on Saturday. They are Monica Anderson; Morgan Anderson; Devin Collins; Kayla Fleskes; Kara Hallock; Helen Ann Haun; co-captain Lucinda Howard; co-captain Samantha Lewis, Ally Jackson; co-captain Rachel Picknell; Rachel Proteau, Madelayne Varela and Emily Weber.
Hallock and McNairy will compete at the Pacific-12 Conference Combined Events (heptathlon) championships at the Whyte Center on Saturday and Sunday. The remaining Beavers will go to the Oregon Twilight Meet at Hayward Field on Friday.
