Mount sets steeplechase record in debut
April 28, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Sophomore Juliana Mount set a school record in her steeplechase debut on Friday to highlight Oregon State performances on Day 1 of the fifth annual High Performance Meet at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
A middle-distance specialist, Mount took sixth place in 10:22.97 and broke Sam McKinnon's old mark of 10:25.78, set at the 2015 Pacific-12 Conference meet. She also ranks in OSU's all-time top-10 in the 800 (2:12.03), 1,500 (4:26.53) and 5,000 (16:42.83).
"I just wanted to finish," Mount said. "The 5K I did at Azusa Pacific [on April 14] was hard for me, it felt like it was really long. Today didn't feel long at all because I was focused on every hurdle.
"I only had one steeplechase workout so I went in with no expectations, and had fun with it. I was a hurdler in high school, but was a little rusty, obviously.
"To get a regional mark already" is great, she added. "I want to see what I can do with more practice."
Redshirt junior Kristiane Width was eighth in 10:30.06, the third-best time in OSU history. Width already holds the 2,000-meter steeplechase school record (6:59.23), set in a 2015 dual against Utah in her only other steeplechase race.
Senior Morgan Anderson placed fifth in the 5,000 meters in 16:17.50, a PR by nearly eight seconds and the No. 2 time in school history. She now ranks second all-time in the 1,500 (4:22.94), second in the 5,000 and fifth in the 800 (2:11.54).
Â
Senior Helen Ann Haun and sophomore Gillette Field each cleared 12-6.75 in the pole vault and each narrowly missed being the first OSU woman to break the 13-foot barrier on their subsequent attempts. Haun took second on fewer misses; Field was sixth.
Â
Senior Emily Weber was 11th in the 5,000 in 16:556.04. Redshirt junior Samantha Lewis took second in her section and 14th overall in 17:16.56, a season-best by almost 90 seconds and just off her PR of 17:07.57.
Â
In the 1500, redshirt sophomore Nicole Goecke (4:37.08) was 33rd, a season-best by two seconds.
Â
Results from the hammer, held at Western Oregon, were not available.
Â
Saturday's competition starts at 10 a.m. with the javelin. The first track event is the women's 4x100 relay at 1 p.m.
Â
The High Performance Meet is the lone home appearance for the Beavers, who have set five  current school records since starting the outdoor campaign at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Invitational on March 18. They also have posted 43 all-time top-10 times or marks.
