Beavers at Bulldog Invitational on Saturday
April 21, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State track & field team heads to California's Central Valley this Saturday for the Fresno State Bulldog Invitational at Veterans Memorial Stadium in neighboring Clovis.
OSU will take its sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers to the meet. It features a mixture of Division I teams, such as the host Bulldogs, Cal Poly, Pacific, UNLV, San Francisco, San Jose State, Cal State Bakersfield, Santa Clara and Cal State Northridge, and several California Division II and Division III programs.
The distance runners will stay behind to prepare for the annual High Performance Meet, set for April 28-29 at the Whyte Track & Field Center. OSU will not run an individual event further than 800 meters at Fresno.
"It's a good meet and a great chance for us to compete in some warmer weather and get some good times and marks," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said, noting Saturday's high is forecast for 83 degrees.
"The High Performance Meet is a big one for our distance crew," which established numerous season-bests at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific this past weekend. We want all of them to be ready for premier performances against what promises to be a very high-quality field at the High Performance Meet."
Redshirt sophomore sprinter Venessa D'Arpino is competing on Saturday. She set school records in the 100 (11.70) and 200 (23.81) meters last Saturday at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State. The Beavers have set three current school records (100, 200, javelin) and have posted 32 all-time top-10 times or marks this season.
The High Performance Meet begins on Friday (April 28) with the Distance Carnival, pole vault and hammer. The remaining events are scheduled for April 29. The hammer will be held at Western Oregon, as the inclement spring weather has postponed the completion of the new hammer throw area at the Whyte complex.
