April 18, 2017 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University has been selected to host the first and second rounds of the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Moda Center in Portland.
The NCAA Tournament will add to Oregon State events in the Portland area, including the Dam City Showcase, the Dam City Classic, baseball games and football practices.
"Hosting one of the pinnacle events in intercollegiate athletics with our highly-respected local partners is an honor and privilege," Scott Barnes, Oregon State Vice President/Director of Athletics and former NCAA Men's Basketball Committee Chair, said. "There is no match for the excitement of the NCAA Basketball Tournament and we are thrilled to have another opportunity to showcase our great university in the Portland Metro area."
"It's great to work for a university and athletic department that are proactive in hosting championship-level events," Oregon State men's basketball coach Wayne Tinkle said. "I want to thank our partners for their efforts to bring the NCAA Tournament to Dam City. We are excited that fans in Portland and Beaver Nation can watch college basketball's premier event in their own backyard."
Oregon State worked in conjunction with the Rose Quarter, the Oregon Sports Authority and Travel Portland on a bid that was submitted this past August. Western cities get to host two first and second rounds, and one regional each year.
The first round of the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in Portland will be held on Thursday, March 17 and the second round will be played on Saturday, March 19.
"The excitement generated by March Madness is simply unparalleled and we are absolutely thrilled to be part of the team that is bringing the NCAA Tournament to Portland," said Drew Mahalic, CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority.
"The NCAA Tournament is one of the nation's premier sporting events, and we're happy to host men's action for the fourth time while bringing women's tournament games to our venue for the first time," said Chris Oxley, Senior Vice President of Venue Operations at the Rose Quarter. "Basketball fans in Portland are extremely passionate and knowledgeable, and we're looking forward to bringing them the best that college basketball has to offer."
"We are thrilled to be selected to host the first and second rounds of the 2022 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament," said Steve Faulstick, Executive Vice President of Convention and International Tourism Sales for Travel Portland. "March Madness has proven to be of great economic impact for the region the past three times we have hosted the event, and our hospitality community is looking forward to making the 2022 Tournament the best ever."
The will be the first time Oregon State has hosted the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament since 1983 when two first round and two second round games were played at Gill Coliseum. The teams that played in Corvallis that year were North Carolina State, UNLV, Oklahoma State, Boston College, Pepperdine and Princeton. North Carolina State went on to win the national championship that year.
Gill Coliseum was also the host site of the NCAA Tournament in 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1964 and 1967.
